Abstract
The early 20th century was a remarkable period with respect to Turkistan’ssocial and intellectual life. The region had been recently capturedby the Russian Empire, and changes were occurring in many areas of the public life. In the present thesis, the changes in Turkistan are explained through Vakit newspaper (1906-1918), which hasnot been used so far. The issues of Vakit between 1907 and 1910 were examined, and the texts about Turkistan were transferred into Latin letters. Section headings were decided by considering the density of the texts obtained. The thesis, which was compiled based on the Vakit writers’ articles that shed light on the society’s characterand life, as well as daily news about Turkestan, attempts to reveal the life, education, habits and problems of the people of Turkestan in those years. The thesis reaches the conclusion that Turkistan during that period was not only having problems with the turmoil caused by the ethnic diversity of its people in different regions, andthe Russian Empire, which tried to control the country’s territory and settled immigrants in order to Russianize the country but also struggling with the country’s lifestyle, education and culture issues that were behind the times.
