Abstract
ABSTRACTSUSTAINABILITY IN PRINTING INDUSTRY: A STUDY ON CARDBOARD LABEL PRODUCTIONIn the process of human development, the world has entered a new era in which climate change is faced and natural living conditions have changed. Environmentalists question the impacts of companies and consumers about the carbon emissions and global warming, and they see climate change as a warning of nature to humanity. Environmental problems starting with resource depletion have led to a number of unpredictable problems. Every industry is looking for an alternative solution to the petroleum products it uses and is moving away from non-renewable petroleum-based products. In the printing industry, sustainability requires a holistic approach that encompasses all aspects of a plant, product, and process, not only making positive changes to the environment, but also ensuring that the requirements of health and safety of employees are fulfilled with all labor laws. In line with the demands of consumers and brands, many printing houses in the printing industry adopt sustainability as a mission and work on a sustainable production approach. In this thesis, the carbon footprint, which is the amount of the total greenhouse gas emissions in unit carbon dioxide, that the basic raw materials such as paper and ink used in the production of the cardboard label, which is a product produced with the offset printing technique in the printing industry, on its journey from production to consumption and then to recycling, was determined. The study was carried out by examining the economic cost and the characteristics of production techniques. Sustainability scores were calculated using MCDA methods with a program based on the data found. Considering different raw materials such as more than one type of paper and ink, which combination is more sustainable was calculated numerically and the optimum production method was determined.
