Abstract
Determination of the effect of cornelian cherry (Cornus Mas L.) fruit on microbiota in professional male football players. Student Name: Emre Batuhan KENGER Name of Supervisor: Prof Dr Fatma Esra GÜNEŞ Objective : The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of lyophilized cornelian cherry on microbiota profile in professional male football players. Material and methods: The football players were assigned to receive 30 grams of cornelian cherrys containing 350 mg of anthocyanins for 6 weeks. Both prior and after the supplementation, the faecal microbiota profiles and changes were determined. Faecal microbiota communities of football players were analysed with 16S rRNA gene method. Results: There was no significant difference on Shannon diversity index and beta-diversity in microbiota after 6-week supplementation of cornelian cherrys. Moreover, a significant difference was found in the density of Parabacteroides goldsteinii (baseline median: 0.06%; final median: 0.37%) prior and after cranberry supplementation (p<0.005). In addition, there was a significant decrease in body fat ratio of football players and a significant increase in jump performance (p<0.005). Conclusion: The supplementation of cornelian cherrys did not show any significant result in diversity indices among professional football players. However, an increase in the density of Parabacteroides goldsteinii stated to have positive effects on the microbiota of cornelian cherrys supplementation, was determined. Moreoever, it was determined a decrement in body fat and an increment in jump performance with cornelian cherrys supplementation.
