Abstract
This study attempts to answer the question of how women were represented_x000D_ in the news in the Hanımlara Mahsus Gazette, which started_x000D_ its publication life in the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century and has_x000D_ an important place in terms of both the history of the press and women’s_x000D_ identity. The magazine publishes its news under two main titles:_x000D_ internal news and external news. While domestic news are included_x000D_ under the title of internal news, external news provide brief information_x000D_ about other countries. This study includes the transcription into_x000D_ the Latin alphabet of all the internal news articles in the first hundred_x000D_ issues of the journal, and it uses the qualitative content analysis_x000D_ technique as a method. As a result of the content analysis carried out_x000D_ in the study, which pivots around the concepts of women and representation_x000D_ and takes Hall’s constructionist approach to representation_x000D_ as its focus, it has been observed that among the categories of “good_x000D_ women”, “victimized women”, and “bad women”, the representation_x000D_ of “good women” is at the forefront and that women are encouraged_x000D_ to emulate this ideal as determined by the magazine. This study supports_x000D_ the conviction that the image of good women in the news contributes_x000D_ to the construction of meanings about women in line with the_x000D_ classification of womanhood determined by the magazine. The representation_x000D_ of victim women takes the second place. The representation_x000D_ of “bad” women in the news is very low, and these news, within the_x000D_ framework of “good” and “bad” women as constructed by the magazine,_x000D_ serve as a means to give certain messages to society. It has been_x000D_ observed that the news texts in the magazine do not contradict too_x000D_ much with the self-claimed aim of being beneficial to society. As can_x000D_ be understood from the way the news are presented and the messages_x000D_ they are meant to give, it is possible to speak of a construction of_x000D_ meaning concerning women in line with the classification determined_x000D_ by the magazine as good.
