Abstract
This study examines the work entitled Risalat al-Imam Malik fi al-sunan wa’l-mawaiz wa’l-adab, which is reported to have been addressed to the Abbasid Caliph Harun al-Rashid and is attributed to Malik b. Anas. The hadiths contained in the work are analyzed through translation, identification of their sources and isnads, assessment of authenticity, and comparison of textual variants. The study discusses the author, purpose, content, and method of the work; its attribution to Malik b. Anas is evaluated by means of isnad analysis, the views of classical scholars, and comparison with other writings. The hadiths were first sought in early collections-chiefly the Kutub al-Sitta—and reports not found there were investigated in other hadith corpora. The textual variants were identified, and their degrees of authenticity were determined in light of the judgments of leading hadith authorities.
