Tahakkümün muhakemesi̇: İhvân-I safâ’da hayvanların özgürleşme mücadelesi̇

Abstract

İslam düşüncesinde hayvan etiğiyle alakalı karşımıza çıkan en dikkat çekici metinlerden biri, İhvân-ı Safâ Risâleleri’nin “Hayvanların Yaratılışının Keyfiyeti ve Onların Sınıfları Üzerine” başlıklı yirmi ikinci risâlesidir. Risâlede hayvan lar tasnif edilmekte ve onların sınıfları ve türleri hakkında betimlemeler yapı larak ayrıntılı bilgiler verilmektedir. Bu yönüyle risâle zoolojiye dairdir. Fakat bu risâle, içinde bulundurduğu ilginç hikâye nedeniyle teorik felsefenin bir alt dalı olan zoolojiye dair bir eser olmanın ötesine geçer. Bu yönüyle risâle bütün varlıkların ahlaki bir ideal perspektifinden incelendiği ve pratik felsefenin geleneksel kısımları olan siyaset, ekonomi ve kişisel ahlakın konuları içinde incelenebilecek konuların ele alındığı bir esere dönüşür. Hikâyede hayvanlar insanların kendilerine yaptıkları zulüm nedeniyle onları cinlerin kralına şikâyet edip Peter Singer’in Hayvan Özgürleşmesi kitabının mesajını andırırcasına özgürlük lerini talep ederler. Dolayısıyla risâle hayvan hakları ile alakalı günümüzde yürütülen tartışmaların Orta Çağda yapılmış iyi bir örneğidir. Risâle, insanın türe özgü özellikleri nedeniyle üstün olduğu iddiasına hayvanların ağzından meydan okumakta, insanlar ve hayvanlar arasındaki muhtemel eşitliğe dikkat çekmektedir. Bu çalışmada insanların sahip oldukları üstünlüğe dair delilleri ve hayvanların onlara itirazları risâlenin teorik taraflarına çok fazla girilmeden sunulacaktır.

One of the most remarkable texts on animal ethics in Islamic thought is the twenty-second epistle of Ikhwān al-Ṣafā‘ entitled “On the Nature of the Creati on of Animals and Their Classes”. In the epistle, animals are classified and de tailed information about their classes and species is given through descriptions. In this respect, the epistle is about zoology. However, this treatise goes beyond being a work on zoology, a sub-branch of theoretical philosophy, because of the interesting story it contains. In this respect, the epistle becomes a work in whi ch all beings are examined from the perspective of a moral ideal and in which issues that can be analyzed within the traditional parts of practical philosophy, namely politics, economics, and personal ethics, are addressed. In the story, the animals complain to the king of the jinn about the cruelty of humans to them and demand their freedom, echoing the message of Peter Singer’s Animal Liberation. Therefore, the epistle is a good example of the current debates on animal rights in the Middle Ages. The epistle challenges the claim that humans are superior because of their species-specific characteristics and draws attention to the possible equality between humans and animals. This study will present the arguments for human superiority and the animals’ objections to them without going too far into the theoretical aspects of the epistle.
