Hollywood bilimkurgu sinemasında biyoteknolojik distopyalar

Abstract

Edebiyattan sinemaya uzanan yolculuğunda popüler bilimkurgu filmleri, hızlı bilimsel gelişmeler ve teknolojiyle çevrili günümüzde en çok izlenen film türleri arasında yer almaktadır. Bilimkurgu bir tür olarak, yaşanan toplumsal kırılmalardan, bilim ve teknolojideki gelişmelerden, ekonomik, ekolojik ve siyasal değişimlerden her zaman etkilenmiş, bu doğrultuda da öykülerinin merkezine güncel gelişmeleri dahil etmiş, ortaya çıktığı ilk günlerden itibaren geleceği tahmin etmeyi kendine misyon edinmiştir. Bu doğrultuda, 1990'lardan itibaren bilim ve teknolojideki gelişmeler ışığında biyoteknolojinin oldukça popüler bir konu haline gelmesiyle popüler bilimkurgu anlatıları da yönünü biyoteknoloji ile ilgili kurgulara çevirmiştir. Çoğunlukla distopik özellikler gösteren bu anlatıların, her alana nüfuz etmiş güvencesizlik ve geleceğin belirsizliği gibi kaygılarla çevrili bu dönemde günümüz toplumunun durumu ve beklentilerini nasıl yansıttığını, aynı zamanda da izleyicilerin bilim ve teknolojiye olan bakış açısını nasıl yönlendirdiğini anlamaya çalışmak bu tez çalışmasının temel araştırma alanını oluşturmaktadır. Bu amaçla, Hollywood Sineması’nda 1990 yılından itibaren üretilmiş, biyoteknolojiyi konu alan popüler bilimkurgu filmleri ele alınmış, içerik ve eleştirel söylem analizi yöntemleriyle incelenerek toplumun güncel kaygılarını ne şekilde yansıttığı ve izleyicinin bilim-teknolojiye yönelik bakış açısını hangi yöne doğru çekmeye çalıştığı ortaya çıkarılmıştır.

In its journey from literature to cinema, science fiction films are among the most watched film genres today due to their connection to rapid scientific developments and technology. Science fiction, as a genre, has always been affected by social ruptures, developments in science and technology, and economic, ecological and political changes. Accordingly, it has included current developments at the center of its stories and has made it its mission to predict the future since the first days of its emergence. In this regard, as biotechnology has become a very popular subject in the light of developments in science and technology since the 1990s, popular science fiction narratives have also turned to fictions related to biotechnology. The main research area of this thesis is to try to understand how these narratives, which mostly display dystopian features, reflect the situation and expectations of today's society in this period surrounded by concerns such as insecurity and uncertainty of the future that permeate every area, and how they direct the audience's perspective on science and technology. For this purpose, popular science fiction films about biotechnology produced by Hollywood since 1990 were examined with content and critical discourse analysis methods to reveal how they reflect the current concerns of society and in which direction they try to direct the audience's perspective towards science and technology.
