The effects of foreign language as a medium of instruction on the academic performance of the undergraduate students after a year long foreign language preparatory program in Istanbul, Turkey

Abstract

Bu çalışma bir eğitim aracı olarak yabancı dilin İstanbul'daki lisans öğrencilerinin akademik performansı üzerindeki etkilerini analiz etmektedir. Ayrıca bir senelik yabancı dil hazırlık eğitiminin yetersiz olması sebebiyle lisans öğrencilerini verimli öğrenmekten alıkoyuyor olması da ele alınmaktadır. Öte yandan lisans düzeyindeki yetersiz dil becerisi sebebiyle bir eğitim aracı olarak bir senelik yabancı dil kursunun öğrencilerin etkili öğrenmesini engelliyor olması da incelenmektedir. Bu faktörler öğrencilerin bir kısmı için belirli psikolojik ve duygusal riskleri tetikleyen zayıf akademik performansla sonuçlanmaktadır. Derslerde başarısız olma stresi, başarısızlık sebebiyle oluşan stres, sınavlara girmeden önce gerginlik, beklentileri karşılayamama baskısı ve burslarını kaybetmek kaygısı öğrencilerin yaşadığı risklerden bazılarıdır. Konuyu incelemek için karma araştırma yöntemi, veri toplamada araştırma aracı olarak anket, yarı yapısal görüşmeler ve sınıf içi gözlemler uygulanmıştır. Veriler, İstanbul'un beş farklı üniversitesinde, farklı bölümlerde okuyan lisans öğrencilerinden toplanmıştır; bunlar Marmara Üniversitesi, Medipol Üniversitesi, İstanbul Üniversitesi, Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesi ve İstanbul Medeniyet Üniversitesi’dir. Veri toplama sonuçlarına dayanarak bir eğitim aracı olarak yabancı dilin öğrenciler üzerinde dersleri anlamalarında zorluk çekmeleri, müfredatın yeterli derecede uygun bir şekilde uygulanmaması, bir yıl süren dil hazırlık programında dille yetersiz aşinalık, bir başka ifadeyle yeterli derecede dilin içine bütün yönleriyle girememe, işbirlikçi olmayan öğretmenler ve derste kullanılan karmaşık kelimeler sebebiyle öğrencilerin akademik performansını etkilediği görülmüştür.

This study analyses the effects of the foreign language as a medium of instruction on the academic performance of undergraduate students in Istanbul, Turkey. It further securitizes the one-year language preparatory program involved in hindering effective learning of the students due to the insufficient language skills at the undergraduate level. These factors result in the poor academic performance of the students which triggers certain psychological and emotional risks among them. The stress of failing the courses, nervousness before appearing for exams, the pressure of not meeting the expectations, and losing the scholarship are some of the risks the students experience. The mixed Research method is applied to study the problem under discussion in which Questionnaire, Semi-Structured interviews, and Classroom Observations are used as the research instrument for data collection. Data is collected from the undergraduate students from different departments studying in five different universities of Istanbul: Marmara University, Medipol University, Istanbul University, Yıldız Technical University, and Istanbul Medeniyet University. Based on the results of data collection, it is evident that foreign language as a medium of instruction affects the academic performance of the students because of the difficulty in understanding the lectures, application of inappropriate curriculum in the class, less acquaintance with the language in a yearlong language preparatory program, uncooperative teachers, and use of complex vocabulary to comprehend the content and lectures.
