In this study, 50 cases due to hanging were examined retrospectively in the autopsies done by The Council of Forensic Medicine, Ankara Group Chairmanship during the years 1987-1990. Hyoid fractures were noted in 15 (% 30) of the cases. The frequency of fractures was increasing by the age. The highest incidence of fractures was noted in typical hangings (% 60). In 9 of 15 fracture cases, the ligature impression was located superior to the thyroid cartilage. In 5 cases, it was located at the level of the thyroid cartilage, in 1 case, it was located below the thyroid cartilage. The ligature material was crotheline (% 60) andrope (% 20) in fracture cases.
