Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to examine the role of fear of growth and self-differentiation in predicting conflict resolution skills in bilateral relationships. In addition, examining the relationship between self-differentiation and fear of growth and examining the main variables in the study in terms of some demographic variables (gender, age, education level, relationship type, relationship duration) are other aims of the research. The sample group created for this relational survey type research consists of participants between the ages of 18-29 who have had previous romantic relationship experience or are currently in a romantic relationship. A total of 288 people, 221 women (76.7%) and 67 men (23.3%), participated in the current study. The data in this research was obtained through forms created online between June and October 2023. The data in the research were obtained through a personal information form, fear of growing up scale, differentiation of self inventory, and romantic partner conflict scale. IBM SPSS Statistics 22 package program was used to analyze the data obtained in the study statistically. Internal consistency values of the scales used in the study were examined. In accordance with the purposes of the research, Pearson Product Moment Correlation, Multiple Regression Analysis, Independent Group t-Test Technique, One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) Technique, Kruskal Wallis-H Test, Levene Test, Post-hoc (Scheffe, Dunnett T3, Tukey HSD, Bonferroni) ) tests were applied. According to the results of the research, negative significant relationships were observed between the participants' fear of growth and their level of self-differentiation. There is a negative correlation between growth fear levels and compromise and avoidance styles; There are positive significant relationships between interactional reactivity, distancing, dominance and submission styles. There was a positive correlation between the participants' level of self-differentiation and compromise style; Positive significant relationships were obtained with avoidance, interactional reactivity, distancing, dominance and submission styles. Tests were conducted to examine whether the scores the participants received from the applied scales differed according to sociodemographic groups. As a result of the tests, it was seen that male participants received higher scores than female participants in self-differentiation, avoidance and submission scores, while women received higher scores than men in dominance scores. According to the analysis made between age groups, it was found that as the age range of the participants increased, the level of fear of growing up decreased. When the levels of fear of growing up in relationship type groups were compared, it was determined that participants in a dating relationship experienced more fear of growing up than married participants. In addition, it was concluded that as the duration of the participants' relationship increased, their fear of growing up decreased.
