Publication: Evlilik uyumu, mizah tarzı ve kaygı düzeyi arasındaki ilişki
Abstract
The main aim of this study was to examine the relationship among marital adjustment, humor style and anxiety. Sample of the study consisted of 225 volunteers married for 1 to 10 years who were working for randomly selected institutions from 5 districts of İstanbul and their spouses (N= 450). Participants filled out information form, Dyadic Adjustment Scale, Humor Styles Questionnaire and Spielberger Trait Anxiety Inventory. Differences between various socio-demographic characteristics in terms of humor style, marital adjustment and anxiety were investigated by using independent samples t test for two independent groups and one-way ANOVA for more than two groups. For the analysis containing variables which were not normally distributed Mann Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis tests were applied. In order to test the independent effects of variables those were found to be statistically significant in one-way analyses, General Linear Model of MANOVA was administered to test the independent effects of variables found to be statistically significant in one-way analyses. Additionally, couples were separated into 4 groups according to their positive and negative humor style levels by K-Means Cluster Analysis in order to find the effect of couple humor style on marital adjustment. Results indicated significant main effects of presence of time being apart in the relationship, male anxiety, humor characteristics and male age on marital adjustment. It was found that couples who have high levels of positive humor characteristics have higher levels of marital adjustment. Correlation analyses indicated significant correlation of female marital adjustment with humor style and presence of time being apart in the relationship. Results revealed significant main effects of age and male anxiety for male marital adjustment. Even though humor style did not show any significant main effect for male marital adjustment, the effect was near the significance level. While high levels of positive humor characteristics found to have a positive effect on marital adjustment, absence of positive humor characteristics did not negatively effect marital adjustment in this sample of couples The results are discussed in the literature.
