Publication: Habercilikte uzmanlaşma : Türk basınında sağlık haberciliği
Abstract
The specialization that started with the Industrial Revolution and determined the media sector significantly has reached a different stage with neo-liberal policies. The consumption approach of the current capitalist system and this transformation in the market structure of the sector have significantly affected the strategy of specialization in the press sector. With the transition to neo-liberal policies in our country after 1980, the press sector has also transformed. In this change at the sectoral level, the question arose as to whether specialization is used in line with commercial interests. One of the specialization branches in the media sector is Health journalism. This study aims to investigate the level of specialization in the health journalism of four newspapers with different target groups. The study focuses on informative news on health for 31 days (07 November 2019 - 07 December 2019). Cumhuriyet as an opinion newspaper, Sabah as the mainstream opinion, Sözcü as the left-wing newspaper and Yeni Şafak as the right-wing newspaper and all its supplements were included in the research. The research was carried out with one of the scientific research models Cross-Sectional Model. Content analysis, one of the qualitative analysis data techniques, was used. As a result of the study, it was concluded that the importance of specialization was not given to these newspapers, which are in a different range, and that the health news was commercialized.
