Yabancı dil öğretiminde kültür destekli programın üniversite öğrencisi genç yetişkinlerin tutum ve motivasyonu üzerindeki etkisi

Abstract

Yapılan çalışmanın amacı vakıf üniversitelerindeki hazırlık sınıflarında okuyan genç yetişkinlerin yabancı dile yönelik tutum ve motivasyon seviyeleri ve dile yönelik akademik başarıları üzerinde öğrenilmesi hedeflenen yabancı dilin ait olduğu kültürün etkisinin geliştirilen kültür destekli program vasıtasıyla incelenmesidir. Gerçek deneme modeli ve standartlaştırılmış açık uçlu görüşme sorularına uygun olarak düzenlenen araştırmada aşağıdaki temel soruya cevap aranmıştır: Yabancı dil öğretiminde kültür destekli program uygulamasının, vakıf üniversitelerinin hazırlık sınıflarında okuyan genç yetişkinlerin tutum, motivasyon seviyeleri ve akademik başarıları üzerinde etkisi var mıdır? Araştırmanın çalışma grubu, bir vakıf üniversitesinin hazırlık programından, yapılan dil sınavı sonucu gruplandırılmış, aynı dil öğrenimi geçmişine sahip kız-erkek karışık toplam 90 genç yetişkin öğrenciyi içeren üç sınıf olarak seçilmiştir. Nitel araştırma için ise deney grubundan rastgele altı öğrenci seçilmiştir. Nicel araştırmada kullanılan ölçekler, öğrencilere uygulamadan önce, sonra ve kalıcılığı test etmek için son testten iki ay sonra tutum ölçekleri olarak uygulanmıştır. Nitel araştırma için ise standartlaştırılmış açık uçlu görüşme soruları kullanılmıştır. Nicel araştırmadan elde edilen verilerle ilgili yapılan analizler, eşleştirilmiş örneklem t-testi ile çözümlenmiş ve buna bağlı olarak yorumlanmıştır. Nitel araştırma için ise öğrencilerle yapılan görüşmenin ses kayıtları yorumlanmıştır. Araştırmadan elde edilen bulgular şunlardır: -Yabancı dil öğretiminde kültür destekli program sonrasında uygulanan son test sonucunda deney grubu ve kontrol grupları arasında anlamlı bir farka ulaşılamamış olmasına rağmen daha sonra uygulanan kalıcılık testi sonucunda zaman içerisinde deney grubu öğrencilerinin tutumlarında olumlu bir gelişme olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. -Deney grubundan rastgele seçilen öğrencilere yönlendirilen standartlaştırılmış açık uçlu görüşme sorularının sonucunda öğrencilerin yabancı dile yönelik tutum ve motivasyonlarında olumlu gelişmeler olduğu görülmüştür. -Araştırmanın akademik başarı üzerindeki etkilerine bakıldığında ise kontrol grubu 1 ile deney grubu arasında anlamlı bir farka ulaşılmış olmasına rağmen deney grubunun kendi içinde tekrarlayan analizlerinde beklenen pozitif değişim elde edilememiştir. Bu bulgunun olası nedenleriyle beraber araştırmacı ve uygulamacılara yönelik öneriler tartışılmıştır.

The purpose of this study was to explore what effect the increased focus on the culture of the target language had on the attitude and motivation of young adults towards foreign language learning. The learner sample studied were students studying English in the preparatory classes of a private university and whose learning was augmented by means of a developed cultural context culture supported programme. The following question was explored: Does the cultural context programme in foreign language education affect the attitude, motivation level and the academic achievement of young adults who are studying in the preparatory classes of a private university? The participants of the study consisted of three classes containing 90 female and male young adults with the same educational background from a private university’s preparatory classes. These learners were placed in their respective groups after a language placement exam. For the qualitative research, six students who were chosen randomly from the experiment group, were used. The instrument used in the quantitative research was an attitude scale, which was administered to the students before and after the program, and then again two months after the last test. For the qualitative research, standardized open- ended interview questions were used. The analyses applied were related to the data collected and analyzed with the matched sample t-test then construed accordingly. The voice recording of the interview were analysed for the results of the qualitative research. The findings of the study are the following: -Although there is no significant difference between the final test results of the experiment and control groups after the cultural context supported program in foreign language education, there are some findings, based on the final attitude scale test, which show that in time there is a positive improvement on the experiment group students’ attitudes. -According to the results of the standardized open- ended interview questions that were asked to the randomly selected students from the experiment group, there has been some positive improvement on the attitudes and motivation of the students towards foreign language learning. -According to the results of the experiment and control group 1 analysis, there has been a significant difference in their academic success. However, there has been no positive improvement of the academic results of the experiment group. Possible reasons for this result have been evaluated in the study. Recommendations are provided at the end of the study to other researchers and those who plan to implement some of the findings.
