Publication: Fütürizm’den siber punka’a: yirminci yüzyıl sanatında teknolojinin değişen yansıması
Abstract
Bu çalışma yirminci yüzyılda görüşlerinin temeline teknolojiyi koyan iki temek sanat akımı; Fütürizm ve Siber punk’ı konu edinmiştir. Tarihsel süreçleri, politik anlayışları ve resim, sinema, heykel, manifestoları ile öne çıkan edebi eserlerinden yola çıkarak teknoloji ve sanat arasındaki ilişkiyi sorgulamaktadır. Tezin odak noktası, Fütürizm ve Siber punk’ın teknolojiyi ele alışındaki benzerlik ve farklılıklardan yola çıkarak birbirlerinde ütopik ve distopik anlamda tamamen ayrılışlarını incelemektedir. Bu akımların ortaya çıkışında etkin olan sosyal kültürel ve politik şartları dikkatle inceleyen bölümlere teknolojinin toplumsal algılanışına kapsamlı bir şekilde yer verilmiştir. Genel analizi desteklemek amacı ile ayrılan bölümlerde, akımlar için dönüm noktası sayılan sanatsal örneklere yer verilirken son bölümde bu çalışmaların estetik anlamda karşılaştırılmaları yapılmıştır. Bu nedenle bu çalışma iki önemli sanat akımının teknoloji algısına ışık tutarak, Siber punk ve Fütürizm akımlarının sistematik bir karşılaştırmasını, disiplinler arası bir bakış açısı ile yapmış ve bu alanda var olan bir eksikliğin giderilmesine katkıda bulunmayı amaçlamıştır
This thesis deals with two major art movements of 20th century that place technology in the centre of their apprehension: Futurism and Cyberpunk. It questions the interrelationship between art and technology through these movements by analyzing their historical background, political standings and sample art works such as paintings, films, sculptures, manifestos and prominent works of literature The focus of the thesis is to point out the similarities and differences of Cyberpunk and Futurism movements arising from their conceptualizing of technology, which are quite distinct from each other due to their completely contradictory utopian and dystopian approaches. The main political, social and cultural conditions giving birth to these movements are carefully probed, and the corresponding affects of these movements on social perception of technology are revealed in detail in subsequent chapters. In order to support the general analysis, separate chapters on the movements present cornerstone pieces of work, and the final chapter also delivers a comparison of these pieces aesthetically. With this study, therefore, the relation of two remarkable art movements with technology will be examined in an STS framework. In this sense, the study will contribute to the existing literature by providing a thorough analysis of Cyberpunk and filling the gap in the systematic comparison of Futurism and Cyberpunk using a multidisciplinary approach.
