Abstract
It is a well-known fact that the relationship with the family, where individuals spend a significant part of their lives and which is part of their lives from the moment they open their eyes to the world, is an essential factor in shaping individuals’ behavior. When viewed from this angle, it is inevitable for individuals who have problematic relationships with their families during childhood, grow up in disruptive families, and are exposed to significant changes in their family structure to acquire undesirable behaviors in the following years. In this thesis, the relationship between the disruptive family events experienced during childhood, family resources, time perspective, materialism, and compulsive buying tendency was examined, from the point of view of life course theory, which assumes that the events experienced by individuals in a certain period affect their lives in the future. For this purpose, in the light of the data obtained from 660 participants, it was concluded that individuals who grew up in disruptive families and were negatively affected by these disruptions had a decrease in their financial and emotional resources, they were prone to past negative time perspective, they exhibited happiness and success-oriented materialistic tendencies, and there was an increase in their compulsive buying tendencies. In addition, negative memories of the past explained materialism and compulsive buying better than financial and emotional deprivation experienced in childhood. In other words, it has been revealed that, compared to experiences, memories play a more significant role in developing undesirable behaviors. Irrespective of the effect of disruptive family events, a decrease in emotional resources has been observed. Supported by literature evidence, this difference resulting from the unexpected finding indicates that the effect of disruptive family events is not stable and may change over time.
