Abstract
Bu tez’de modernleşmeyle birlikte Doğu toplumlarının, Batı’nın yaşam tarzına uyumlanamaması neticesinde içine düştüğü bunalımlı durum ele alınmıştır. Çalışmanın amacı modern Arap romanının öncüsü olan Necîb Mahfûz’un “Hanu’l-halîlî”, modern Türk romanının önde gelen yazarı Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil’in “Mai ve Siyah” adlı romanlarınımodernleşme bağlamında karşılaştırmaktır. Çoğulcu inceleme yönteminin kullanıldığı bu çalışmada modernleşme sürecinde ortak sorun yaşayan Doğulu bireylerin bu zor süreçle baş etme becerilerinde birtakım benzer ve farklı yönlerin bulunduğu görülmüştür. Bu karşılaştırmalı çalışmanın sonucunda, bireylerin farklı tepkiler göstermesinin ardında sosyokültürel ortamdan kaynaklanan yaşamı algılama biçiminin, ortak tepkiler göstermesinin ardında ise benzer psikolojik yapıların etkili olduğu tespit edilmiştir.
This thesis mainly focuses on the depression that the Eastern societies go through as a result of their inability to adapt to the Western life style. The purpose of this thesis is to draw a comparison between the novel “Khan al-khalili” written by Naguib Mahfouz, the pioneer of modern Arabic literature and the novel “Blue and Black” writtenby Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil one the most prominent writers in Turkish literature in the context of modernization. This study, in which the pluralist analyzing method is employed demonstrates that Eastern individuals develop some similar as well as different aspects in their coping skills in dealing with the challenging modernization process. As a result of this comparative study, it has been established that while the underlying reason for the individuals different reactions is the difference in their perception of the world based on their sociocultural surroundings, the underlying reason for the common reactions is the similar psychological structures.
