Modernism in Ottoman & Turkish music and the years of 1930s and 1940s

Abstract

TÜRK&OSMANLI MÜZİĞİNDE MODERNLEŞME VE 1930’lu 1940’lı yıllar: Türk Müzik Devriminde Garbiyatçı ve Modernleşmeci Endişeler. Bu araştırmanın asıl ve öz amacı 1930’lar ve 1940’lardaki erken cumhuriyet döneminde ortaya çıkan sosyo-politik ve kültürel dinamikleri ve oluşumları irdelemektir. “Modernleşmeci” ve “Garbiyatçı” endişeler sonucu ortaya çıkan bu discurlar bu çalışmanın en temel dayanağıdır. Bu tez genel sonuç ve giriş bölümü dahil 5 bölümden oluşmuştur. Çalışmanın giriş bölümünde, erken cumhuriyet dönemine geniş bir yelpazeden yaklaşan bilginin yanı sıra, Osmanlı&Türk müziğinin, geç Osmanlı döneminden Kemalist ulus inşa sürecine kadar uzanan bir bilgisel dönem verilmiştir. Giriş bölümünde “Modernleşme,” “Modernizm,” “Milliyetçilik,” “Milli İdeoloji” unsurları üzerine tartışmacı bir fikir bütününe de yer verilmiştir Tezin İkinci bölümünde, 1930’lar da ve 1940’lar da yayımlanan müzik ve radyo mecmualarına yoğunlaşılarak yapılan arşiv çalışmasından elde edilen bulgular vardır. Bu bulgular, kişisel günlükler, yorumlar, sunum ve röportajlar ve gazete haberleri sonucu elde edilen gerçeklere dayanmaktadır. Tezin Üçüncü bölümünde “Popüler Kültür” kavramını tartışarak Türk Müzik tarihinin 1940 sonrası ve geç 1980 öncesi dönemine, 1930 ve 1940larda oluşan discurlara atıflar ve referanslar yapılarak, değinilmiştir. Sonuç bölümünde, elde edilen bulgu ve verilere genel olarak değerlendirilmiş ve yeni elde edilen araştırma sorularına yer verilmiştir. MODERNISM IN OTTOMAN&TURISH MUSIC AND THE YEARS OF 1930s and 1940s: Modernist and Occidentalist Anxieties in Turkish Music Revolution The main purpose of this research is to reveal, display and chart the socio-political and cultural motions, dynamisms of 1930s and 1940s on the path of music revolution discourses in the early republic era. These socio political discourses which are constituted in the framework of “Occidentalist” and “Modernist” anxieties are main veins of this research. The research is formed of 5 Chapters including an introductory part and a general conclusion In the first chapter, an extended general chart of the early republic era is provided, focusing on the origins of Ottoman&Turkish music from late Ottoman Times and its transformation during Kemalist nation building times. In this introductory chapter, a critical discussion on the “Modernism”, “Modernization”, “Nationalism” and “National Ideology” concepts are also provided. In the second chapter, the findings and observations are provided regarding the archive research studies that mainly focused on the music and radio periodicals of 1930s and 1940s. A detailed archive study including personal diaries, comments, arguments, interviews and news on the periodical regarding the music revolution are the main materials displayed in this chapter. In the third chapter, the concept of popular culture and its place on the Turkish music history since 1940s till the late 1980 is discussed and analyzed. References and attributions to the discourses accumulated in music revolutions are provided, including a limited field research. The conclusion part offers the general concluding remarks obtained at the end of this thesis and offers the new research questions obtained at the end of this study.
