Abstract

Vocational and craftmanship education and training were provided in our country by the "Ahilik" up to 1860's, which were informal education institutions. In later years, vocational and craftmanship schools were founded as formal education and training institutions. As for the Republic era, especially after the 1930's a need for the qualified teachers in technical education arose, compatible with the western education. Thus, at first in 1934-35 Technical Teacher Training School for Girls and in 1937-38 Technical Teacher Training School for Boys were put into operation in Ankara. These institutions supplied workshop and vocational teachers for the Vocational and Technical Education High Schools. Higher Technical Teacher Training School for Boys has been renamed as Higher Technical Teacher Training School after a change of regulation in 1975. Hence, this school has become co-educational and boys and girls attended the school. Because of the rapid increase in population, the Higher Technical Teacher Training School in Ankara no longer answered the student demands. At the same time, teacher vacancies started to grow. Because of that, İstanbul Higher Technical Teacher Training School was founded 1976-77 in Istanbul. In this paper, the education and training of this institution, its graduates and its transformation to faculty is treated.
