Publication: Istanbul nostalgia : collective memory of conservative women
Abstract
Bu çalışmada muhafazakâr kadınların İstanbul’a dair mekân aidiyetlerine, toplumsal hafıza bağlamında eski güzel İstanbul nostaljisi algılarına odaklanılmıştır. Bunun için 20-40 yaş grubundan 7 kadınla, 60 yaş ve üzeri 7 kadınla mülakat yöntemi ile görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Görüşmeler sırasında kadınlara İstanbul ile kurdukları bağı anlamaya yönelik sorular sorulmuştur. Bunun için toplumsal hafıza, mekan aidiyeti ve nostalji literatüründen yararlanılmıştır. Kadınların İstanbul’a dair otobiyografik anıları dinlenerek kentin muhafazakâr kadınların toplumsal hafızasındaki temsiline ulaşmak hedeflenmiştir. Eski güzel İstanbul söylemine odaklanılmış ve İstanbul’un değişimi hakkında muhafazakâr kadınların yorumu anlaşılmak istenmiştir.
This thesis focuses on how conservative women's nostalgia for Istanbul is constructed in the context of collective memory. The sample was specifically selected to understand conservative women's nostalgic relationship with the city and to explain the relationship between feelings of nostalgia and identity construction. Within the scope of the study, I conducted interviews with fourteen women using semi-structured interviews, one of the qualitative research methods. It has been found out that conservative women's nostalgia for Istanbul is motivated by adaptation to the city; it is constructed in a way that strengthens their identities as both Istanbulites and conservatives. Finally, this thesis aims to contribute to the study of collective memory through gender, identity and city attachment.
