Publication: Pandemi döneminde uzaktan eğitimin ergenlerin fiziksel aktivite ve beslenme alışkanlıklarına etkisi
Abstract
Purpose: To determine the effect of distance education on physical activity and eating habits of adolescents due to the restrictions applied during the pandemic. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted between May 1st and October 31st, 2021 with 570 nursing students studying at a state university in Istanbul. Data: Collected with Personal Information Form, International Physical Activity Survey, Nutrition-Exercise Behavior Scale, evaluated using percentage distribution, mean, Wilcoxon test, Mann Whitney U, and Kruskal Wallies. Results: When the total and sub-dimension mean scores of the adolescents on the nutrition-exercise behavior scale were compared with the period and before the pandemic, it was found that the mean score received from the “unhealthy nutrition-exercise behavior” sub-dimension decreased during the pandemic period (p<0.001). Upon examination of the distribution of physical activity levels of students according to the international physical activity survey during the pandemic period, it was found that 24.2% were inactive, 48.8% were minimally active, and 27% were very active. During the pandemic period, the Sitting MET mean score of those who were obese according to body mass index was significantly higher than those who were normal (p=0.044). Conclusion: Low unhealthy nutrition-exercise behavior of students during the pandemic suggests that they withdrew from unhealthy nutrition behavior. It could be argued that the pandemic lowered physical activity levels of students attending remote learning, increasing inactivity. It is considered that students that completed adolescence would be affected from negative results of inactivity in the near future which creates a health risk. The fact that obese people have higher sitting met scores compared to other groups before and during the pandemic poses a threat to their health, and physical activity-related precautions should be taken for this group.
