Abstract
TEZ ÖZETİ Üç ana bölümden müteşekkil olan bu çalışmada, ağırlıklı olarak Sultan II. Mahmud’un dönemi, siyasî tarih açısından ele alınmıştır. Bir devlet adamı, bir asker ve bir Pâdişah olarak II. Mahmud’un şahsiyeti ve insani meziyetleri ön plana çıkarılmak suretiyle araştırmamıza yön verilmeye çalışılmıştır. Birinci bölümde, genç yaşta tahta oturan II. Mahmud’u nasıl bir ortamın beklediği, iyice bozulmuş olan devlet otoritesini yeniden sağlamak için onun ne gibi tedbirlere müracaat ettiği ve hem dışta hem de içte devletin itibarını kurmaya yönelik olarak izlemiş olduğu devlet politikasının tahlili, çeşitli açılardan işlenilmeye gayret edilmiştir. İkinci bölümde, Osmanlı Devleti’nin yıkılmasında kuşkusuz büyük bir paya sahip olan milliyetçilik fikirleri ve sebepleriyle beraber bu fikirlerin etkileri irdelenmiştir. Son bölümde ise Yeniçeri Ocağı’nın kaldırılmasından sonra yapılan reformlar ve bu reformların devletin üzerindeki etkileri ele alınmıştır. Sonuç kısmında ise, döneme genel bir bakış yapılmak suretiyle Sultan Mahmud’un neleri başarıp neleri başaramadığı, devletin ömrünün uzamasına yönelik olarak ne gibi katkılar sağladığı, olumlu ve olumsuz yönleriyle onun tüm icraatları değerlendirilmeye çalışılmıştır.
