Abstract
In this study, the effects of cerium oxide (CeO₂) addition at 1%, 2.5%, 5%, 10% and 20% by weight on the density, hardness, compression and microstructural properties of olivine were examined. For this purpose, olivine with and without CeO₂ addition was sintered at 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1450 and 1500ºC for 3 hours each. As a result of the examinations, the highest density (2.845±0.014 g/cm³), hardness (479.44±8.220 HV) and compressive strength (95.52±6.36 MPa) values for olivine without CeO₂ addition were obtained at 1400ºC. It was determined that these properties decreased with increasing temperature and decreased to 2.786±0.012 g/cm³, 369.78±5.370 HV and 45.18±4.04 MPa, respectively. It was determined that the reason for this decrease for olivine without CeO₂ addition was due to increasing average grain size and crack formation at temperatures of 1450 and 1500ºC. For CeO₂ added olivines, the highest density (3.291±0.021 g/cm³) was obtained at 1300ºC, and hardness (876.9±8.539 HV) and compressive strength (180.25±7.65 MPa) values were obtained at 1400ºC. From these obtained values, it was determined that with the addition of CeO₂, 15%, 82% and 88% increases could be achieved in the density, hardness and compressive strength values of olivine, respectively. It was determined that the reason for this was due to the intermediate phases formed and the decrease in average grain size. Crack formation was also observed in CeO₂ added olivines at 1450 and 1500ºC, however; It was determined that CeO₂ was at a lower rate compared to olivine without addition.
