Publication: Görme engelli öğrencilerde yoga ve hatırlatıcı bilekliğin postural farkındalık ve özsaygı üzerine etkisi
Abstract
Purpose: To determine the effect of yoga exercise and reminder wristband on postural awareness, posture and self-esteem in visually impaired students.Materials and Methods: This semi-experimental study in the random pre-test post-test layout was conducted with 20 primary school students attending a school for the visually impaired between March and June 2019. Ten of the students were randomly assigned to the yoga exercise group and the other 10 to the reminder wristband group. The yoga exercise and the practice of wearing a reminder bracelet, which are the initiatives of the 12-week program, took 8 weeks. Data were collected by Socio-demographic Form, New York Posture Analysis, Postural Awareness Assessment Form and Coopersmith Self-Esteem lnventory. The data were evaluated using percentage distribution, mean, Chi-square test, Non-parametric Wilcoxon Sign Test and Mann-Whitney U test. Results: Posture, postural awareness levels (knowledge-state-behavior) and self-esteem scores of the students in both yoga exercise and reminder wristband groups; There is a statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test data (p<0,005). While there was no difference between the pretest and self-esteem scores of both groups (p=0,76), there was a difference between the posttest scores (p=0,03).Conclusion: The yoga exercise and the reminder bracelet increased the postures of the visually impaired students from medium to very good levels, and increased their postural awareness and self-esteem levels. This school-based and nurse-led study was found effective.
