Fotoğraf sanatında görüntü kalite faktörleri

Abstract

Bu tez çalışmasında fotoğrafın görsel kalitesini belirleyen tüm kalite faktörlerinin bilimsel tanımları, görüntüleme sistemlerinin temel teorisinden başlayarak, fotoğraftaki görsel etkileri, ölçüm yöntemleri ve yaygın kaynaklarda karşılaştığımız test sonuçlarının, fotoğraf sanatçıları tarafından anlaşılması için gereken bilgiler üzerinde çalışılmıştır. Fotoğraf veya genel olarak görüntüleme sistemlerinde, görüntü kalitesi birçok fiziksel görüngü ve etkiden meydana geldiğinden dolayı, tek bir parametre ile gösterilemez. O yüzden görüntü kalitesini tanımlamak için, görüntüde meydana gelen tüm etkiler birbirinden bağımsız faktörler olarak tanımlanmıştır. Genel olarak görüntüleme sistemlerinde, görüntü kalitesi sekiz bağımsız faktör olarak tanımlanmıştır ve bu faktörlerin her birine uygun ölçüm yöntemi geliştirilmiş ve kullanıma göre uygun birimler seçilmiştir. Teknolojinin ilerleyişi ile ulaşılan kalitelerin ölçümü için yetersiz kalan yöntemler yerine, zaman zaman yeni yöntemler ve birimlere de ihtiyaç duyulmuştur. Esasen optik mühendisliği konusu olan bu bahisler, fotoğrafçılar ve sanatçılar tarafından zor anlaşılırken birde farklı ölçüm yöntemleri ve ölçümlerin değişik birimlerle beyan edilmeleri, ölçümlerin gerçek anlamlarının anlaşılmasını imkânsız hale getirmiştir. Bu çalışmada görüntü faktörleri tek tek ele alınarak, günümüze dek geliştirilen tüm ölçüm yöntemleri ve birimleri, ayrıca bu birimlerin birbirine dönüştürmeleri de anlatılmıştır. Ayrıca bu tez çalışmasında fotoğraf sanatının günümüzün teknolojisiyle bulunduğu nokta, tüm artılar ve eksileriyle çok detaya girilmeden temel kavramlar şeklinde anlatılmaya çalışılmış ve fotoğrafçılara yönelik, konuyla ilgili yayımlanan makaleler ve kaynaklarda karşılaşılan teknolojiler, birimler ve terimlerin anlamlarına da yer verilmiştir.

This thesis gives the definition of all the factors determining a photograph’s visual quality. It begins with a treatment of the basic theory of imaging systems, and discusses the visual effects of a photograph, measurement methods, and test results given in commonly used resources. Particular attention is paid to make the content easily accessible for artistic photographers. Because the image quality of a photograph or more generally an imaging system depends on a number of physical phenomena and effects, it cannot be quantified in terms of a single parameter. As a result in order to determine the image quality, each of the effects contributing to the image is considered as an independent factor. In general the image quality of an imaging system is defined in terms of eight independent factors. For each of these factors, an appropriate measurement scheme is developed and depending on the particular application proper units is employed. By the advance of technology, there has been a need for new methods and units for measuring image quality factors. Because the subject is usually treated as a part of optical engineering, usually photographers and artists have difficulty understanding the technical results. This together with the problems associated with the use of different measurement methods and units obscure the meaning of the performed measurements. This thesis offers a comprehensive and separate discussion of each of the quality factors. It describes all the currently known measurement methods and units, and provides transformation schemes relating different choices of units. In addition, a particular effort is made to outline the status of the art of photography within the context of today’s technological advances paying attention to the advantages and disadvantages of the latter. All this is however done within a general framework and without delving into unnecessary details. As the thesis addresses photography artists, it provides a readable discussion of all the techniques, units, and technical terms that are typically encountered in the literature on the subject.
