İstanbul'daki uluslararası üniversite öğrencilerinin yerel halkın kentlilik bilincine dair algıları ve deneyimleri

Abstract

Bu araştırma, İstanbul halkının kentlilik bilinci düzeyini İstanbul’da lisans ve lisansüstü düzeyde eğitim gören uluslararası üniversite öğrencilerinin perspektifinden öğrenmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Kentlilik bilinci; bireylerin kent kültürünü benimsemeleri, kentsel farkındalıkları, yaşadıkları kente aidiyet hissetmeleri ve kent sorunlarıyla ilgilenmeleri üzerinden değerlendirilmiştir. Araştırmada karma yöntemin eşzamanlı iç içe geçmiş deseni benimsenmiştir. Nicel veriler “Kentlilik Bilinci Anketi” aracılığıyla toplanmış ve verilerin istatistiksel analizleri için SPSS 30.0 kullanılmıştır. Nitel veriler ise odak grup görüşmeleri yoluyla elde edilmiş, içerik analizi yöntemiyle değerlendirilmiştir. Araştırmanın örneklemi, İstanbul’un sosyal ve kültürel çeşitliliğini yansıtan, lisans ve lisansüstü düzeyde eğitim gören 397 uluslararası öğrenciden oluşmuştur. Bulgular, İstanbul halkının kentlilik bilincinin uluslararası öğrenciler tarafından ne iyi ne de kötü olarak algılanmadığını göstermektedir. Katılımcıların algılarında, ikamet ettikleri yer, ikamet süresi ve İstanbul halkının hoşgörü düzeyi değişkenlerine göre anlamlı farklılık olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bu araştırma; yerel yönetimlere hangi konularda iyileştirme yapılması gerektiğine ilişkin yol gösterici olması; İstanbul’un algılanan kimliğini keşfetmemizi sağlaması; uluslararası öğrencilerin kentle kurdukları ilişkiyi yerel toplumun kentle kurduğu bağ üzerinden görmemizi sağlaması; uluslararası öğrencilerin İstanbul'da karşılaştığı sosyal ve yönetsel sorunlara ışık tutması bakımından özgün bir değere sahiptir. Araştırma bulguları, İstanbul’da kentlilik bilincinin geliştirilmesi için sadece fiziksel altyapı çalışmalarının değil, aynı zamanda toplumsal uyumu ve kentsel aidiyeti arttıran politikaların da hayata geçirilmesi gerektiğini göstermektedir.

This research aims to learn the level of urban consciousness of the people of Istanbul from the perspective of international university students studying at undergraduate and graduate levels in Istanbul. Urban consciousness was evaluated through individuals' adoption of urban culture, urban consciousness, sense of belonging to the city they live in, and their interest in urban problems. In this context, the mixed method simultaneous triangulation design was adopted in the research; quantitative data were collected through the Urban Consciousness Survey and statistical analyses were conducted with the SPSS 30.0 program. Qualitative data were obtained through focus group interviews and evaluated manner with the content analysis method. The sample consisted of 397 international students studying at undergraduate and graduate levels, reflecting the social and cultural diversity of Istanbul. The findings show that the urban consciousness of the people of Istanbul is neither perceived as good nor bad by international students. It was determined that the variables of place of residence, duration of residence, and the tolerance level of the people of Istanbul were effective in the perceptions of the participants. This research; guides local governments on which issues need to be improved; enables us to discover the perceived identity of Istanbul; It has a unique value in that it allows us to see the relationship between international students and the city through the bonds established by the local society with the city; and in that it sheds light on the social and administrative problems that international students face in Istanbul. The research findings show that in order to develop urban awareness in Istanbul, not only physical infrastructure works but also policies that increase social harmony and urban belonging should be implemented.
