Abstract
In our study called social control and religion, relations of social control with the religion and how religion functions as being social control agent are researched. Within the scope of the study, interviews were made with religious people those are affiliated to religious communities, in order to measure control of religion in their lives. In this thesis, qualitative research has been done by using interpretative percpective as sociological approach, and phenomenological design as research design. The study consists of introduction, two main chapter, theoretical and applied, and conclusion. In the introduction, information was given about the subject, purpose and importance, methodology, scope and limitations of the research. In the first chapter of the research, which we discussed theoretically, it was examined what social control is, its important theories, types, agents etc. and for understanding social control better, its similarities and differences with concepts such as social order, deviation and norm are presented. Then it is tried to show theoretically, how religion contributes to social control. As we know, the main purpose of social control is to maintain the existing order in society and to prevent unwanted actions such as deviance and crime. Religion considerably contributes to this activity, with its conservatism and legitimizing features externally and by influencing the conscience and morality of the individual or by providing religious morality to the individual internally. In the second chapter of the thesis, interviews are made with the religious people affiliated to traditional sufistic religious communities in the Turkish society. A total of 40 people from 4 different religious communities (Menzil, İsmailağa, Erenköy, İskenderpaşa) were interviewed and the data obtained were sociologically analyzed and interpreted. Interpretations are generally presented by making comparisons with the results of relevant studies. In conclusion, we can say that religion is a very important factor in many areas of religious people's lives and religion is an important controlling power in the lives of religious people.
