Abstract
EFFECTIVE USE OF INTERNET AND WEB TECHNOLOGIES IN TEXTILE AND TEXTILE EDUCATION This study has intended to examine websites offering textile education in the light of instructional design criteria. For this purpose, pages of the websites offering textile education and information were examined regarding to the 'instructional design criteria' determined through the literature review. To what extent, these websites apply to the criteria such as attracting students' attention and providing the continuity; informing students about the instructional objectives; preparing information relevant for the course; presentation of the information and assistance; exercises and feedback; evaluation of success; improvement of recognition and transition and success degree of the software, was studied. Each website was analyzed with the help of the evaluation sheet in advance. The mathematical score given to each article in the evaluation sheet was interpreted as a statistical value and the websites were compared regarding these values. It was also stated to what extent these websites were meeting the required criteria. Search engines were used to reach the sites offering textile education. The fact that number of those sites increase in time and that they are updated within short intervals makes it difficult to determine the universe of the research. The first step was to reach the websites offering textile education by the help of search engines and to select 25 of them at random. . As a second step, these selected websites were examined by 40 students chosen again randomly and 6 of the websites having the highest scores were used as the study set of this research. The Instructional Design Evaluation Sheet was applied on the study set of 40 individuals selected from the students of Textile Program at Tekirdağ Vocational Studies School, Trakya University in the academic year 2002-2003. The 'Instructional Design Evaluation Sheet' (APPENDIX-A), which was developed in the light of the literature review, was used in order to decide whether the websites offering textile education comply with the instructional design criteria. The collected data were used to prepare statistical tables. Furthermore, means and standard deviations of the study set and the teachers were determined and evaluated for each section (8 sections and 61 questions) of the instructional design evaluation sheet. The evaluation scales were decided to be between 1 and 3 (1: unsuccessful, 3: successful). Evaluation of each section has indicated that the selected websites have managed to exceed the mean. The evaluation based on the total scores has demonstrated that students and the academic staff had similar tendencies. As a result of this evaluation, Turkish website of www.geocities.com/ egemaden/ htm was given 1.8943 points by students and 2.0372 by the academic staff. This website has been declared to be the most successful website with these highest scores. On the contrary, German website of www.ita.rwth_aachen.de was given 1.6179 and 1.3016 points by the students and the academic staff respectively. This address has been declared to be the least successful website with these lowest scores. In general, however, neither of these websites from six different countries seems to meet the total of the instructional design criteria.
