Abstract
COMPARISION OF THE ACADEMIC KNOWLEDGE LEVELS AND THE SECONDARY SCHOOL CIRRICULUM KNOWLEDGE LEVELS OF CHEMISTRY PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS Prospective teachers’, who contribute to the development of science, technology and new findings, learning chemistry in secondary school is very significant. An effective and useful chemistry learning in secondary school is possible with well educated teachers. Nowadays there are lots of studies for efficient teaching. The most important concept related to teaching is ‘subject matter knowledge’. Is the training sufficient for the prospective teachers who are educated in university? This study was carried out whether there is reasonable relationship between their academical chemistry knowledge and their secondary schools chemistry knowledge. And also it is aimed to find out what would the level of prospective teachers’ academic level and secondary school level correct answers to the questions, would depend on. 53 prospective teachers, who go on their education at 4th and 5th grades at Marmara University Secondary School Science and Maths Teaching Chemistry Education department, took part in the study. ‘Secondary School Knowledge Chemistry Test’ and ‘Academic Knowledge Chemistry Test’ is formed by the researcher. The tests are formed by 20 multiple choice test questions. In the process of preparing tests some changes were carried out within the views of experts. The study was held in 2008/ 2009 spring term. The data was analyzed on SPSS program and the results were shown by the graphs and tables. It was found that there is reasonable relationship (0,01 rate) between the level of academic and secondary school chemistry knowledge of prospective teachers. And it was found that the 5th grade prospective teachers are more successful than the 4th grade prospective teachers. And we couldn’t find any reasonable relationship about the roles of the prospective teachers’ genders, the type of high schools which they graduated from and if they work or not. Key words: Prospective elementary teachers, Chemistry education, subject matter knowledge
