Abstract

Velilerin özel okulları tercih etme nedenleri : bir karma yöntem araştırması Bu araştırmada, velilerin devlet okullarından ziyade özel okulları tercih etmelerine neden olan faktörler incelenmiştir. Özel okullar, Tanzimat döneminden itibaren Batılılaşmanın bir sembolü olarak eğitim sisteminde yer almış, özellikle 1980’li yıllardan sonra sayıca önemli bir artış göstermiştir. Günümüzde özel okullar, eğitimin her kademesinde yer alan ve sayısı giderek artan kurumlar haline gelmiştir. Araştırma, velilerin özel okul tercihlerine yön veren akademik, ekonomik, sosyal ve yönetsel etmenleri ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu çalışma, karma yöntemle yürütülmüş; nicel bölümde tekil tarama modeli, nitel bölümde ise olgubilim deseni kullanılmıştır. Nicel veriler, özel okullarda çocukları okuyan 224 veliye uygulanan “Özel Öğretim Kurumlarının Tercih Edilmesine Etki Eden Faktörler Ölçeği” aracılığıyla toplanmış; nitel veriler ise 15 veli ile yapılan yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler yoluyla elde edilmiştir. Nicel veriler SPSS 27 programında parametrik analizler ve yapısal eşitlik modeliyle; nitel veriler ise içerik analiziyle değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgulara göre velilerin özel okul tercihinde en belirleyici unsurlar; eğitim öğretim kalitesi, okulun fiziksel koşulları, güvenli ortamı, yabancı dil eğitimi, değerler eğitimi ve veli beklentilerine duyarlılıktır. Araştırma, özel okul yöneticileri, sahipleri ve eğitim politikası yapıcılarına yönelik çeşitli öneriler sunmaktadır.

Reasons for parents to prefer prıvate schools: a mıxed methods study This study investigates the factors that lead parents to prefer private schools over public schools. Since the Tanzimat period, private schools have emerged as a symbol of Westernization and have shown a remarkable increase in number, especially after the 1980s. Today, private schools have become institutions that operate at all levels of education and continue to grow in number. The aim of this research is to reveal the academic, economic, social, and administrative factors influencing parents’ preferences for private schools. The study was conducted using a mixed-methods design; the quantitative part employed the survey model, while the qualitative part was based on the phenomenological design. Quantitative data were collected from 224 parents whose children attend private schools through the “Factors Affecting the Preference of Private Educational Institutions Scale” developed by Karataş and Varlık (2019). Qualitative data were obtained from semi-structured interviews with 15 parents. Quantitative data were analyzed using parametric statistical techniques and structural equation modeling via SPSS 27, while qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. Findings revealed that the most influential factors in parents’ preference for private schools are the quality of education, physical facilities, school safety, foreign language and second foreign language education, responsiveness to parents’ expectations, tuition flexibility, and values education. The study concludes with recommendations for private school owners, administrators, and policymakers.
