Abstract
In this study, the aim is to evaluate the family relationships and romantic relationships of young adults with boarding school experience within the framework of attachment theory. Boarding schools, where thousands of students continue their education annually, are considered opportunities for families and students in terms of transportation, economic resources, and educational quality. However, spending adolescence away from their families and under institutional authority, which is a critical period of development, can leave some negative effects on students. This study will focus on the reflections of boarding school experience on individuals' family relationships and romantic relationships. A qualitative research method and phenomenological approach have been preferred to allow in-depth examination of participants' perceptions and experiences related to boarding school experience. The study was conducted with 15 young adults aged between 23 and 38 who had experienced boarding school at least once during secondary school or middle school levels. Semi-structured Interview Technique and Semi-Structured Interview Form prepared by the researcher were used for data collection. Content analysis method, which explains and interprets the collected data, was preferred for data analysis, and the qualitative data analysis program MAXQDA-24 was used. The created codes and categories were organized into diagrams through application, leading to the identification of themes. In this regard, a total of 12 different themes were discovered in the study. Seven different themes were identified regarding how young adults with boarding school experience perceive boarding: Career Step, Life-Teaching, Growing Up with Challenges, Escape from Family Home, The Greatest Gain of Boarding: Friendships, The Cruel Face of Boarding, and Boarding as a Risk. Regarding the reflections of this experience on individuals, two different themes were identified: Self-Construction and Traumatic Experience. Regarding the reflection of boarding school experience on family relationships, themes identified were Loss of Attachment Figure and Changing Family Relationships. Finally, regarding the reflection of this experience on romantic relationships, the theme of Insecure Attachment was identified. The themes were discussed within the framework of the relevant literature.
