Abstract
The Effect of Peer Education About Carbonhydrate Counting on Metabolic Control ın Adolesacents With Type 1 Diabetes Carbohydrate counting method in medical nutrition therapy provides freedom the people with diabetes. Peers are the most important people during the period of adolescence. This prospective experimental research was planned to determine the effect of peer education about carbohydrate counting on metabolic control in adolescents with type 1 diabetes. The scope of the research was the registered adolescents between the ages 13-17 in Ministry of Health Bakırköy Women and Children Diseases Education and Research Hospital Department of Endocrinology, and the sample was the adolescents with type 1 diabetes (n=108) who hospitalized or being for routine appointment during February-June 2009 and suitable for eligibility criteria. Information Form about Adolescents with Diabetes, Metabolic Control Results Form, Carbohydrate Counting Education Packet for Peer Educator, Carbohydrate Counting Manual which was developed by the researchers based upon the literatures were administered to the adolescents for the collection of data. Experimental and control groups were given planed education and the findings obtained in the groups were compared. In research when the metabolic control results compared between the experimental and control groups it was fount out that there was a significant decrease in experimental groups for pre-prandial blood glucose, post-prandial blood glucose and HbA1c levels. It was found out that the peer education decrease the post-prandial blood glucose and HbA1c levels better than the other educators. Key words: Type 1 diabetes, adolescent, metabolic control, peer
