Publication: Beklenti ve tecrübe sarmalında gerçeklik şoku : yeni mezun bilgi teknoloji profesyonelleri üzerine nitel bir araştırma
Abstract
This study examines the perception of reality shock, which has been studied on various occupational groups in the literature, on information technology (IT) professionals, which is a different occupational group than in the literature. In this context, revealing the antecedents and meanings of new graduated IT Professionals' perception of reality shock, since the phenomenon of reality shock expresses the dilemma between expectation and experience; It is aimed to develop a perspective on expectations, reality shock experiences and the consequences of reality shock in the context of IT Professionals. To this end, a deep and comprehensive investigation was performed on 28 new graduated IT Professionals academic staff (software engineers, software developers, software specialists, embedded software engineers), who had experienced reality shock in the mentioned context, by using the phenomenological approach as a qualitative method. At this point, semi-structured in-depth interview technique was used as a tool to generate the basic data. Furthermore, other data collection tools such as observations, pre-interviews and document analysis were also used to triangulate and enrich the data. The data set obtained by the data collection tools was subjected to content analysis and the expectations and reality shock experiences of new graduated IT Professionals were explained with the code-sub-theme-main theme pattern. Research findings were discussed in the context of, the reasons for IT Professionals to choose a department, their expectations, their experiences during the job search process, the expectations they gave up in this process and the reasons for reality shock were discussed. On the other hand, inductive assessments were made by digging the grounded meanings of the research data, and it was concluded that reality shock experiences in IT organizations have many different dynamic infrastructures. The obtained results were discussed by comparing the results of the studies in the literature on various occupational groups and the subject was evaluated in the context of individual, organizational and education. Within this framework, the study in question has developed unique definitions and different understandings for the phenomenon of reality shock with its specific context-specific determinations. In this sense, it is thought that the research will provide important clues that can guide future researches and will also constitute a basic resource for researches on the subject.
