Bahri memlüklerde Naib-i Saltanatlık

Abstract

Bahrî Memlükler Devleti’nde saltanat nâibliği, sultandan sonraki en güçlü makamdır. Bu kişiler en üst rütbeli emirler arasından seçilirdi. Sultanın vekili olarak onun adına ülkeyi yönetirdi. Saltanat nâibleri, en önemlileri askerî ve idarî görevler olmak üzere birçok göreve sahiptiler. Onlar, Memlük siyasî hayatında önemli bir role sahipti. Sultanlar bu makama güvendikleri kişileri atarlardı. Ancak bu mevkinin tahta çıkmak için bir basamak olarak görüldüğü ve saltanat nâiblerinin kolaylıkla mevcut sultana rakip olabildikleri de görülmektedir. Sultanlar saltanat nâiblerini dikkatle seçmelerine rağmen bu emîrler, diğer emirlerle iktidar mücadelesinde yer almaya devam etmişlerdi.

In the Bahri Mamluks, nâibu’s-saltana. was the most powerfull person after the Sultan himself. He was chosen among high-ranking amirs. As the representative of Sultan, nâibu’s-saltana governs the country. The military and administrative matters were among the responsibilities of nâibu’s-saltana. Nâibu’s-saltana. played an important role in the Mamluk political life. Sultans appointed only the most trusted amirs to the office of nâibu’s-saltana, because this office could be seen as a stepping stone to the throne and nâibu’s-saltana could easily became a political rival to the Sultan himself. Although sultans carefully chose their nâibu’s-saltana, they continued to take place in the power struggle of Mamluk politics with other amirs.
