During this Ph.D. research, a number of new oxo- and azo- bridged ligands were prepared by the reaction between 3-nitrophthalonitrile or 4-nitrophthalon- itrile and isomers of phenylphenol (orth-, meta-, and para-) as startingmaterials. The oxo-bridged ligands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 were prepared by aromatic nucl-eophilicsubstitution in alkaline media when 3- or 4-nitrophthalonitrile treated with one of the isomers of phenylphenol. The azo-bridged ligands N1, N2, N3 andN4 were prepared by diazotization of 4-aminophthalonitrile and coupled with 2-hydroxybiphenyl, 2- methoxybiphenyl, 4-hydroxybiphenyl, and 4-acetyloxybiphenyl respectively. The novel peripheral and non-peripheral metal-free phthalocyanines 2HPc 1, 2HPc 2, 2HPc 3, 2HPc 4, 2HPc 5 and 2HPc 6 were prepared by cyclotetrameri-zation of the corresponding ligand. The novel peripheral and non-peripheral metallo-phthalocyanines MPc 1, MPc 2, MPc 3, MPc 4, MPc 5 and MPc 6 ( M= Zn, Cu and In[OAc] ) were prepared by cyclotetramerization of the corresponding ligand in the presence of metalacetate. All the synthesized oxo-ligands, azo- ligands, metal-free phthalocyanines and metallo-phthalocyanines were characterized by standard methods:(elemental analysis, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, MALDI-TOF-MS,FT-IR and UV-visspectrop- hotometry) and the spectra conforms with proposed structures. The prepared phthalocyanines showedexcellent solubility and non- aggregated species were formed in chloroform, dichloromethane, toluene, tetrahydrofuran, N,N-dimethylformamideand dimethylsulphoxide.
