Publication: Erkek öğrencilerin cinsel deneyimleri ve toplumdaki cinsel tabulara yönelik görüşleri
Abstract
Background: Religious rules, prejudices, customs and habits have, to a large extent, taken precedence in human sexual behavior and these concepts which become taboos interfere with natural and open expression of opinions about sexuality, which is a part of life. Objective: Our study was conducted as a descriptive study for the purpose of determining the opinions of male university students about social taboos related to sexuality. Methods: The study sample was comprised of 400 male students who were registered at four different faculties at Marmara University in Istanbul province, who were present on the dates the research was conducted and who agreed to participate in the study. 37-item questionnaire was used for data collection. The data statistical analysis was conducted using percentage, Chi square test and logistic rejection analysis. Results: The mean age of the students in our study was 21.33 ± 2.10 years and nearly all (99.5%) of the students were single. The students' first sexual experience occurred when they were at a mean age of 17.28 ± 1.81 years and 31.0% stated that they still have active sexual lives, 85.8% thought that there were social taboos about sexuality and, in particular, identified lack of sexual equality at 22.3%, determination of virginity at 21.5%, and that they did not agree with the taboos at 26.5%. It was determined that 60.5% of the students stated that virginity is "very important/ important" and 47.8% looked negatively on having multiple partners. Conclusion: It can be stated that male students at the university are aware of communal taboos and they do not cross over the communal norms with their considerations about sexuality of which they experince as well.
