Abstract
Lycee III Students'Level of Understanding of Chemistry-II Concepts Which Are Seen as Difficult for them by Chemistry Teachers. The aim of this study is to find out students' level of understanding of difficult concepts in Chemistry-II at Lycees and examine possible sources of misunderstanding. Five units at Chemistry-II curriculum was investigated. These units: Condensed Phases of Matter (Liquids and Solids), Radioactivity, Rates of Chemical Reactions, Chemical Equilibrium, Acids and Bases. Interview, questionnaire and test methods were used as main research instruments in this research. More specifically, teachers and students were interviewed (informal with teachers and formal with students). The questionnaire and the test, both were developed on the basis of piloting processes were implemented to a sample of students which were selected from four lycees of the province of Kütahya. The aim of pilot study was to find out reliability, validity and usefullness of the study instruments. As a result of analysis of collected data, it was found that the students from different lycees have some similar level of understanding for the concepts in Chemistry-II. Reaction mechanism was one of the unit in which most common misunderstandings were found. The results were discussed throughly and some suggestions were presented to contribute to development of chemical education. Key Words: Chemical education, concept teaching, difficult chemical concepts, level of understanding of concepts.
