Abstract
The start of the publication of the Mekteb journal, which was published in Kazan in 1913-1914 and whose responsible author was Shihab Ahmerov, coincided with a period when the Muslims of Russia hoped that the pressures following the first period of relative freedom in 1905 would ease back on the 300th anniversary of the accession of the Romanov dynasty to the throne. Among its notable authors are Mahmud Fuad (Tuktar), Muhyiddin Kurbanaliyev, Halil Ebulhan, Ayn Fi (Reshid Fahreddinov), Abdullah Battal (Taymas), Hadi Atlasov (Atlasî), Fatih Seyfi (Kazanlı), Ahmed Zeki Velidi (Togan), Necib Dumavî, Ayaz İshakov (İshakî İdilli). As its name suggests, the magazine/ journal set out to improve educational life as well as Tatar schools and education and was able to publish 25 issues during its 20-month of publication life. It is possible to say that the journal, which ended its publication life due to various difficulties but probably mostly due to the beginning of the First World War, had an important place at that time in the educational community of Russian Muslims, especially in Kazan. In order to increase the quality of education, articles on improving the curriculum, programs, madrasahs/ schools, and the place of women and girls in education predominate. In addition, research on education in other countries especially in the US, political articles aiming to ignite national and political awakening, comments about some people who have important place in Turkish history, and news peculiar to the period also frequently appeared in the magazine. In this study, all 25 issues were evaluated and the biographies of the responsible editor Shihab[eddin] Ahmerov and 10 authors with the most articles were included, then the content analysis of the articles in the magazine was made, and at the end of the study, all articles were classified first chronologically, then according to their authors and then according to their subjects.
