Abstract

The thesis is focused on the pressures and challenges facing South Sudan in its state-building. The paper investigates and concludes that corruption and bad governance have derailed the nation-building process of South Sudan. The thesis comprises four chapters that are linked to each other to inform, describe and discuss the issues raised precisely and in a methodical way. The thesis provides a general overview of the formation of South Sudan. Through comparative analysis of various literatures it shows how Sudan ceded its territory to South Sudan. On the other hand, the paper highlights the history surrounding the protracted Civil War in Sudan. Further, it shows how breaking off, secession, and independence of South Sudan happened. Finally, it links South Sudan’s trouble to the several civil wars. Additionally, the paper defines various key words such as state-building, governance and corruption. It also differentiates between bad and good governance. A brief comparative analysis of governance in Kenya and South Sudan is also touched on. Accordingly, the thesis highlights the aspects of poor governance and how they have crippled state-building in South Sudan. Lastly the paper concludes by laying out a way forward as well as giving recommendations on how to improve State-building in South Sudan. State Building, Corruption, Bad governance, Fragile State, Failed State.
