Abstract
The purpose of the research thesis is to comprehend the identity construction processes of digital native generations who are experiencing an unprecedented identity construction process in the digital culture of information, compared to previous generations. Within this scope, the literature section of this thesis includes compilations from literature scans in an interdisciplinary manner from psychological and sociological perspectives. Identity processes at individual and societal levels have been examined. The journey of identity from tradition to postmodernity, extending to the information society, has been historically conveyed in line with views of communication theorists on the subject. Various views ranging from early stages of generational classifications to current understandings of generations have been put forward and examined to understand the identity processes of digital natives better. As part of the research, a qualitative research design of phenomenological research was adopted, and thus, in-depth interviews were conducted with 25 participants from Generation Y and 25 participants from Generation Z. The research findings have comparatively revealed the real and digital identity perceptions of digital native generations and provided in-depth information on their digital identity construction processes. The discussion section has been structured as a reflection of the analysis and findings, and the data have been analyzed by comparing it with relevant theories from previous literature. The identity processes of digital natives, which have become a playground around their concepts of transparency, perceptions of privacy, ways of marketing their identities, and the perceptions they create have been examined. As a result, a picture of the journey of identity construction or destruction, ranging from prominent thoughts at the individual level to differences, has been drawn in the context of identity perceptions of digital native generations.
