IB-PYP uygulayan okullardaki İngilizce dersine ilişkin öğretmen ve koordinatör görüşleri

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Türkiye'de IB-PYP (International Baccalaureate- Primary Years Programme) uygulayan okullarda İngilizce dersine ilişkin öğretmen ve koordinatörlerin görüşlerini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Araştırmanın temel sorusu, Türkiye'deki IB-PYP uygulayan okullarda İngilizce öğretmenlerinin ve koordinatörlerinin İngilizce dersine ilişkin görüşleri nelerdir? olarak belirlenmiştir. Araştırmanın alt amaçları, IB-PYP programının İngilizce dil eğitimi üzerindeki etkilerini, programın uygulanması sırasında karşılaşılan zorlukları ve başarıları öğretmen ve koordinatörlerin bakış açısından ele almaktır. Nitel araştırma yöntemi kullanılarak gerçekleştirilen bu çalışmada, İstanbul'daki IB-PYP okullarında görev yapan 10 İngilizce öğretmeni ve 5 PYP koordinatöründen yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler aracılığıyla veri toplanmıştır. Katılımcılar, en az üç yıllık IB-PYP deneyimine sahip olma kriterine göre seçilmiştir. Görüşmelerden elde edilen veriler, MAXQDA yazılımı kullanılarak tematik analiz yöntemi ile incelenmiştir. Araştırmanın sonuçları, IB-PYP programının öğrencilerin dil becerilerini geliştirdiğini, öğretmenlerin ve koordinatörlerin profesyonel gelişimlerini desteklediğini, ancak ulusal müfredatla entegrasyon sürecinde bazı zorluklarla karşılaşıldığını ortaya koymaktadır. Ayrıca, öğretmenlerin IB-PYP programını uygulama sırasında mesleki gelişimlerinin önemini vurguladıkları görülmüştür. Bu araştırmanın, IB-PYP programının İngilizce eğitimi üzerindeki etkilerine yönelik mevcut literatüre katkı sağlaması hedeflenmektedir.

This thesis aims to examine the perspectives of teachers and coordinators on English language classes in schools implementing the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB-PYP) in Turkey. The main research question is, What are the views of English teachers and coordinators in schools implementing the IB-PYP in Turkey regarding English language education? The sub-goals of the research are to explore the effects of the IB-PYP on English language education and to identify the challenges and successes encountered during the program's implementation from the perspectives of teachers and coordinators. This study adopts a qualitative research method, collecting data through semi-structured interviews with 10 English teachers and 5 PYP coordinators working in IB-PYP schools in Istanbul. Participants were selected based on the criterion of having at least three years of IB-PYP experience. The data obtained from the interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis with the help of MAXQDA software. The results of the research indicate that the IB-PYP program enhances students' language skills, supports teachers' and coordinators' professional development, but also reveals some challenges in aligning the program with the national curriculum. Furthermore, teachers emphasized the importance of their professional development while implementing the IB-PYP program. This study aims to contribute to the existing literature on the impact of the IB-PYP program on English language education.
