The impact of domestic factors in United States foreign policy towards Turkey during AKP era

Abstract

Soğuk Savaş sonrasında çok boyutlu bir ortaklığa evrilen ABD-Türkiye ilişkileri, literatürde birçok bağlam çerçevesinde incelenmiştir. Ancak, bu incelemeler sırasında ABD-Türkiye ilişkilerinde iç politika unsurlarının dış politika yapım süreçlerindeki etkisi çok fazla çalışılmadı. Bu tez, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'ndeki iç politika aktörlerini analiz ederek iç unsurların ikili ilişkideki rolünü belirlemeyi ve literatürdeki boşluğu doldurmayı amaçlamaktadır. Tez, iç politika faktörlerinin değişen rolünü göstermek için AKP döneminde yaşanan gelişmelere odaklanacaktır. AKP döneminde ABD Dış Politikasında iç faktörlerin Türkiye'ye olan etkisine ışık tutmak için kamuoyu, çıkar grupları, medya ve Kongre’nin dış politika yapım sürecindeki rolü analiz edilecektir. Bu çalışma, AKP döneminde iç politika faktörlerinin ABD dış politikası üzerinde etkili olduğunu kanıtlayacaktır.

US-Turkey relations that have evolved into a multidimensional partnership during the Cold War era have been examined in the literature by various contexts. However, the impact of domestic factors in the foreign policymaking process in this relationship has been understudied. This thesis aims to determine the role of domestic factors in the bilateral relationship by analyzing the domestic factors in the United States and fill the gap in the literature. This thesis will focus on the developments during AKP era to demonstrate the changing role of domestic factors. To shed a light on the impact of domestic factors in the United States Foreign Policy towards Turkey during AKP era this thesis will focus on the role of public opinion, interest groups, media, and the Congress on foreign policymaking process. It will aim to prove that the domestic factors impacted Unites States foreign policy towards Turkey during AKP Era.
