Publication: Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'ndan Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'ne uzanan bir okulun hikayesi : İstanbul Amerikan Kız Koleji (1871-1932)
Abstract
Bu çalışmada, Amerikan Board teşkilatına bağlı olarak kurulan misyoner okullarından birisi olan İstanbul Amerikan Kız Koleji’nin kuruluşu, Osmanlı Devleti’nden Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’ne uzanan süreçteki gelişimi ve öğretim ncelenmiştir. İstanbul Amerikan Kız Koleji, 1871 yılında bir ev okulu olarak faaliyetlerine başlamıştır. Öğrenci sayısının artması ve eğitim öğretim faaliyetlerinin ilerlemesiyle beraber 1890 yılında Massachusetts eyalet yasalarına göre kolej statüsüne kavuşmuştur. Kuruluşundan sonra Üsküdar’da eğitim faaliyetlerini sürdüren İstanbul Amerikan Kız Koleji, buradaki kolej binalarının yanması üzerine Arnavutköy’e taşınmış ve eğitim hayatına burada devam etmiştir. 1971 yılında bulunduğu kampüsü Boğaziçi Üniversitesi’nin kurulması için Türk hükümetine devreden Robert Koleji, Arnavutköy’de bulunan Amerikan Kız Koleji ile birleşmiş ve karma eğitime geçilmiştir. 1971 yılında birleşen bu iki okul halen varlığını sürdürmekte ve günümüzde Özel Amerikan Robert Lisesi olarak hizmet vermektedir.İstanbul Amerikan Kız Koleji vermiş olduğu nitelikli eğitimle birlikte hem Osmanlı’da hem de Cumhuriyet döneminde kadınların modernleşmesi sürecine ciddi bir şekilde katkı sağlamıştır. Toplumun her alanında eşitlikçi ve özgürlükçü kadınlar yetiştirmeyi hedefleyen ve büyük ölçüde bu hedefine ulaşan İstanbul Amerikan Kız Koleji, ülkemizdeki kız okulları arasında ayrı bir öneme sahiptir.
In this study, the establishment of the American College for Girls in Istanbul, one of the missionaries established schools, depending on the organization of the American Board, its development process from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey and its curriculum were examined. Istanbul American College for Girls started its activities as a homeschool in 1871. With the increase in the number of students and the progress of educational activities, it gained the status of being college in 1890 according to Massachusetts state laws.Istanbul American College for Girls, which proceeded its educational activities in Üsküdar after its establishment, moved to Arnavutköy after the college buildings burned down and continued its education life here. Robert College, which transferred its campus to the Turkish government for the establishment of Boğaziçi University in 1971, merged with the American College for Girls in Arnavutköy and started coeducation. These two schools, which merged in 1971, still exist and today it continues its education as Private American Robert College.Istanbul American College for Girls has contributed significantly to the modernization process of women both in the Ottoman Empire and in the Republican period with the quality education it has provided. Aiming to raise egalitarian and libertarian women in all areas of society and reaching this goal to a large extent, Istanbul American College for Girls has a special importance among the schools for girls in our country.
