Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate and examine the effect of perceived social support on meeting basic psychological needs of female athletes aged 7-14 in different districts of Istanbul. Materials and Methods: The research was carried out with 408 female athletes between the ages of 7-14 who competed in sports facilities or school teams in 5 different districts of Istanbul, Sultanbeyli, Pendik, Kadıköy, Bayrampaşa and Başakşehir. 3 team sports (basketball, volleyball and football) and 3 individual sports (gymnastics, taekwondo and swimming) were included in the study. Within the scope of the study, Personal Information Form, Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale and Basic Psychological Needs Scale created by the researcher were used. In the analysis of the data obtained in the study, descriptive analyzes, One Way Anova Test, canonical correlation and simple linear regression analyzes were used. Results: It was determined that there were moderate and weak relations between multidimensional perceived social support sub-dimensions and basic psychological needs sub-dimensions (X2(9)=11.23, p=.00). The scores of the participants living in Pendik from the Basic Psychological Needs Scale [F= 9.39 ; p<0.05] and their scores on the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support [F= 9.35 ; p<0.05] differs significantly from other districts. In addition, the total scores obtained from the two scales do not differ according to age, branch variable and the number of days of doing sports per week. Conclusion: The result of the study shows that there is a significant relationship between female athletes' perception of being supported by their social environment and meeting their basic psychological needs.
