Publication: Türkiye üniversiteleri fen/ fen- edebiyat ve eğitim fakültelerinde verilmekte olan genel biyoloji derslerinin öğrenciler, öğretim elemanları ve ders programları yönleri ile incelenmesi
Abstract
Genel Biyoloji dersi 1. sınıf Biyoloji öğrencilerinin, Biyolojinin tüm ilke, kuram, prensip ve kavramlarını genel olarak tanıyacakları ilk derstir, bu özelliğinden dolayı da ileri biyoloji derslerinin bilgi alt yapısının oluştuğu bir süreçtir. İleri derslerde detaylı olarak çalışacakları konulardaki bilgiler, bu temel kavramlar üzerine yapılandırılarak oluşur Bu çalışma Türkiye Üniversiteleri, Biyoloji bölümlerinde verilmekte olan Genel Biyoloji derslerini, öğrenci bilgisi, öğrencilerin öğrenmesine etki eden etmenler, öğretim elemanlarının dersle ilgili akademik özellikleri ve onların kavramsal öğrenme hakkındaki görüşlerini alarak incelemek amacı ile yapılmıştır. Çalışma, İstanbul, Ankara, İzmir Üniversitelerindeki 369 Biyoloji öğrencisi ve 34 öğretim elemanı ile yapılmıştır. Öğrencilere uygulanan 20 soruluk bir bilgi testi ile onların Genel Biyoloji konularındaki kavramsal öğrenme başarıları ölçülmüştür. 12 sorudan oluşan bir sormaca ile de öğrencilik özellikleri ve öğrenmelerine etki eden etmenler belirlenmiştir. Öğrencilerin uygulanan test ve Genel Biyoloji derslerinin işlenişi hakkındaki görüşleri rasgele seçilmiş öğrencilerle mülakatlar yapılarak kaydedilmiştir. Öğretim elemanlarının Genel Biyoloji konularında öğretmeleri beklenen kavramlar hakkında görüşleri ve akademik özellikleri de 47 soruluk sormaca ile saptanmıştır. Öğrencilere verilen bilgi testi sonuçları, Genel Biyoloji derslerinde kavram öğreniminin tam olarak gerçekleşmediğini göstermiştir. Bunun nedenleri, öğretim elemanlarının kendi çalışma alanlarındaki konulara önem vermeleri, çok sayıda öğretim elemanlı derslerde koordinasyon ve ortak program olmayışı, öğrenme ortamındaki eksiklikler ve öğrenci isteksizliğidir. Öğretim elemanları ise sorulan kavramların derste öğretilmesini uygun buldukları halde, öğrencilerin başarısızlığı bunların öğrenilemediğini ortaya koymuştur.
General Biology is the first course for Biology students to understand the concepts, theories, rules and principles of Biology, thus it is the period for formation of knowledge framework for future courses. The knowledge that will be studied in future courses, are constructed on these basic concepts. In this study, General Biology courses in Biology departments of Turkish Universities are examined by the students' knowledge, factors affecting students' learning, academic qualifications of teachers and their perceptions about conceptual learning. The study is performed with 369 biology students and 34 teachers at Universities in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir. With the application of a 20-item subject test to students, success of conceptual learning in General Biology courses is evaluated. With a 12-item questionnaire, the student qualifications and factors affecting the learning are determined. Randomly selected students are interviewed for their opinion on the presented subject test and the instruction of General Biology course. The academic qualifications of instructors and instructors' opinions on the General Biology concepts, that are expected to be instructed are determined by a 47-item questionnaire. Results of the subject test show that conceptual learning is not fully accomplished. The reasons are: the instructors give importance to their own research area subjects, the coordination on the course program can not be provided among the instructors if the course is taught by more than one instructor, the existence of deficiencies in learning environment and students' motivation. Although instructors believe that the concepts which are asked in the test must be learned in the course, the low success of the students shows that these concepts were not learned.
