Publication: Bir sosyal dışlanma biçimi olarak yoksulluğun Türkiye’deki televizyon haberlerine yansımaları
Abstract
REFLECTIONS OF POVERTY AS A FORM OF SOCIAL EXCLUSION IN TV NEWS IN TURKEY In a world where severe income inequality prevails, the media and especially television plays an important role in perpetuating inequality and poverty. The media embraces and maintains the ideology and values of the dominant groups in the society, which are also dominant in the media industry. Especially the mainstream media, as part of corporate capitalism, is well integrated with the political economy of neo-liberalism. An inescapable consequence of this structure is the invisibility of a large number of facts including poverty in the mainstream media, which seems to perceive them threatening to the capitalist system. This study examines the coverage of poverty in Turkish TV channels by focusing on how their main news bulletins define poverty and represent the poor and their conditions. Based on critical media studies, this dissertation mainly deals with the questions what factors are decisive in the production of TV news and what their impact is on the formation of the discourse on poverty. It aims to provide a coherent account of the economic, political, and cultural aspects leading to the generation of the discourse about poverty in Turkish TV news. Furthermore, the study also analyzes the position of this discourse within relationships of domination, thereby shedding light upon its ideological dimension. Thus, it discloses what functions TV news stories about the poor and poverty serve and how they become articulated with the other dominant discourses.
