JOHN GARSTANG AND SAKCAGOZU EXCAVATIONS (1908-1911)
(EGE UNIV, 2019-12-19) ÇİFÇİ, ALİ; Cifci, Ali
Sakcagozu, located in the Nurdagi district of Gaziantep province, was excavated by John Garstang between 1908 and 1911 during two excavation seasons. Of the 11 identified layers, IX. and X contain the Neo-Hittite palace enclosure, which was surrounded by walls and had a 'bit hilani' structure decorated with reliefs. The excavation records, photographs and materials held at the University of Liverpool's Garstang Museum of Archaeology, as well as materials held at the Archaeological Museum of Istanbul were utilised for this study. Garstang's relations with the director of the Imperial Museum Osman Hamdi Bey, and Sir Edwin Pears from the British Consulate in Istanbul at the time, will also be considered. I will also consider how Garstang obtained the excavation permit for the Sakcagozu and his subsequent interest in the Neo-Hittite reliefs found here.

'I Have Made a Highway of Biainili': Transportation and Road Networks in the Territories of the Urartian Kingdom
(De Gruyter Open Ltd, 2021) ÇİFÇİ, ALİ; Çifçi A., Gökce B.
After emerging in the Lake Van Basin of Turkey, the Urartian kingdom expanded its territory across Eastern Anatolia, Northwestern Iran, and Armenia between the late 9th and early 7th century BC. The high altitude of these regions and the climatic conditions, especially long and harsh winters with heavy snowfall, likely forced the Urartian monarchy to establish a reliable network of communication: new roads and new settlements along these roads were established between the capital city Tušpa and other parts of its territory. This study presents a reassessment of the archaeological and textual evidence on Urartian routes used for military campaigns, settlements located along these routes, ancient road remains and means of transportation. © 2021 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.

Kahramanmaraş Müzesi’nde bulunan yeni bir Geç-Hitit mezar steli
    (2022-12-01) ÇİFÇİ, ALİ; Çifçi A., Başpınar G.

Review of Mount Ağrı - Bozkurt Kurgan cemetery excavation book
    (2023-07-01) ÇİFÇİ, ALİ; Çifçi A.
The book, which is bilingual in Turkish and English, consists of six chapters with a presentation, a short introduction to the work done on Mount Ararat, a foreword and acknowledgements. The book deals with the results of the excavations and surveys carried out between 2007 and 2013 in Bozkurt Village, which is located on the Iğdır Plain-Aras Valley Pass at the northern end of Doğubayazıt Plain. Although many archaeological excavations and surveys have been carried out in the Eastern Anatolia Region, these studies mostly focus on Middle Iron Age (Urartian) archaeology (Çifçi 2017: 23-24; Çifçi 2020: 17-18; Çifçi 2022). Hence, archaeological excavations and surveys in Mount Ararat and its surrounding areas provide us with a unique opportunity to study various periods from Chalcolithic to the Middle Iron Ages.

The economy of the Urartian Kingdom
(Peeters Publishers, 2021-01-01) ÇİFÇİ, ALİ; Çifçi A.
After an opening review and critique of Soviet and Western and Turkish scholars (some of whom were influenced by Marxism) and their interpretations of the socioeconomic structure and nature of Urartian society, this chapter goes on to examine briefly the topography, hydrology, climate and ecology of the Urartian lands before turning to mainstays such as agriculture (increasingly important), animal husbandry and metallurgy, and trade and the spoils of war. A lengthy synthetic discussion then ensues within a framework of the three phases of socio-economic and political development identified by the author (expansionist, transitional and crisis) and the general trend to greater centralism. The discussion includes an examination of the Sarduri II’s inscription of Hazine Kapısı/Analıkız at Van Kalesi and how particular terminology should be and has been interpreted.
