Individual and organizational antecedents of trait mindfulness
(ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2019) TURGUT, TÜLAY; Kalafatoglu, Yaprak; Turgut, Tulay
Previous research on the antecedents of mindfulness is scarce. This study examines the individual and contextual antecedents, specifically ethical climate and goal orientation, of trait mindfulness. Data for this study came from 302 white-collar employees working in Istanbul who completed cross-sectional questionnaires on ethical climate, goal orientation, and mindfulness. First, it was found that caring climate, which refers to organizations that consider the wellness of its workforce, positively predicted employees' trait mindfulness. Second, goal orientation was significantly associated with trait mindfulness. Mastery and performance-approach orientations both predicted positively to trait mindfulness with mastery orientation the strongest predictor. In contrast, a performance-avoidance orientation predicted negatively to trait mindfulness. As a caring climate predicts to employees' mindfulness, it is recommended that organizations create a workplace where employees perceive themselves as family members, with an emphasis on teamwork, participation, and intrinsic motivation.

Value-Personality Link Measured With Novel Instruments Developed With an Emic Perspective
(PSYCHOPEN, 2017-05-31) ÇİNKO, MURAT; Tevruz, Suna; Turgut, Tulay; Cinko, Murat
The first aim of this study is to investigate whether instruments developed with an emic approach in Turkey produce the same trait-value links obtained with studies using near universal instruments, and if emic traits and value concepts are composed under agency and communal conceptions. So, the first aim of this study is to inspect the conceptual similarities in the links between traits and values. The second aim is to examine the moderating effect of disposable income on the strength of the trait-value relationship. Undergraduate and graduate students (N = 595) from six universities in Istanbul responded to the Personality Profile Scale (PPS) and the Life Goal Values (LGV) questionnaire. Second order factor analysis indicated that indigenous value and trait items were representative of communal and agency conceptions. Furthermore, most of the value-trait links revealed with regression analysis, and the sinusoid relationships revealed with Pearson correlation coefficients were consistent with the findings measured with near universal instruments. Additionally found relationships between traits and especially conservation values can be interpreted as the instrumentality of agentic traits for personal as well for social focused values. Disposable income had a moderating effect on five trait-value relationships and three out of five were weaker in the low-income group.

Organizational Culture and Organization Based Self-Esteem as Predictors of Spirit at work
(KHAZAR UNIV, 2016-12) TURGUT, TÜLAY; Unal, Zeynep Merve; Turgut, Tulay
This study aims to investigate the relationships between organizational cultures, spirit at work, and organization based self-esteem among academicians, and whether organization based self-esteem mediates the relationship between organizational culture and spirit at work. A cross-sectional design was employed, and data were collected through a questionnaire-based survey. Based on the convenience sampling, 417 academicians answered the questionnaire in public and private universities located in Turkey. To analyze the data descriptive statistics, Pearson coefficient, simple and multiple regression analyses were conducted. Feminine organizational culture has more positive contribution on experiencing spirit at work than masculine organizational culture. Moreover, organization based self-esteem does not mediate the relationship between types of organizational culture and spirit at work. Results suggest that organizations hoping to enhance their employee's spirit at work could focalize creating an organizational environment that fosters employee spirit at work. The originality of this paper is that it creates awareness and emphasizes potential contributors that foster an individual. s experience of spirit at work.

Integrating Turkish Work and Achievement Goals With Schwartz's Human Values
(PSYCHOPEN, 2015-05-29) ÇİNKO, MURAT; Tevruz, Suna; Turgut, Tulay; Cinko, Murat
The purpose of this study was to examine the integration of indigenous values developed in Turkey to Schwartz's universal values. Students (N = 593) from six universities in Istanbul responded the value scale, which consists of 10 etic PVQ items (each item representing one of 10 main Schwartz values) and 23 emic WAG items (representing work-achievement goals). PROXSCAL, a multidimensional scaling method, was used to test whether etic and emic sets of values integrate and form the universal circular structure proposed in Schwartz value theory. The motivational continuum of values as a circular structure was similar to pan-cultural results, but adding another value type to the openness to change pole. While some of the items in this region represent autonomy of thought, remaining items diverge. The principle of conflicting values on opposite poles was not supported in relation to openness to change-conservation dimension. These two poles had similar priorities, contrasting with pan-cultural results, and demonstrating a culture-specific aspect of responding to motivational goals. Insights gained by emic studies will be functional in enriching understanding values, and contributing to the comprehensiveness and universality of Schwartz value theory.

WORKPLACE INCIVILITY: SCALE DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION
(2018) TURGUT, TÜLAY; MELDA KEÇECİ;TÜLAY TURGUT
The main purpose of this study is to explain the concept of workplace incivility, which is anunderestimated subject in Turkey but a popular one in the international literature and to develop a Turkishincivility scale. Workplace incivility does not intend to harm others but it harms workplace norms and putsa peaceful workplace environment into danger. For this reason, it is an important topic for the businessworld. In this study, Coworker Incivility Scale and Supervisor Incivility Scale were developed seperatelybecause workplace incivility has two different sources, coworkers and supervisor.

Caregivers' attitudes toward potential robot coworkers in elder care
(SPRINGER LONDON LTD, 2019) TURGUT, TÜLAY; Erebak, Serkan; Turgut, Tulay
Technological advances in robotics increase progressively. Elder care is one of the work areas which have potential to involve robotic workforce. So, it is important to focus on interaction between humans and potential robot workers to prepare the organization for possible challenges. The current study examined the relationships between trust in robots and anthropomorphism of robots, intention to work with robots and preference of automation levels. For this purpose, 102 caregivers who work for elder care in a nursing home (aged between 19 and 40) participated in an experimental study. According to the results, anthropomorphism of robots did not make any difference in terms of trust in them. Trust in robots was significantly related to intention to work and preference of automation levels. Organizations may consider employees' trust in robots as an important factor before adapting them to workplace area.

The mediator role of robot anxiety on the relationship between social anxiety and the attitude toward interaction with robots
(SPRINGER, 2020) TURGUT, TÜLAY; Erebak, Serkan; Turgut, Tulay
Robots that can communicate with people are one of the goals reached by the technology developed for automation in work life. Experts aim to improve the communication skills of these robots further in the near future. Besides, various studies emphasize that people may interact with robots in a similar way as they interact with other people. In line of this idea, this study examines the possible causal chain in which the social anxiety affects the robot anxiety which in turn affects the attitude toward interacting with robots. Data obtained from university students were analyzed in a simple and parallel mediation model. The results showed that robot anxiety and in particular two of its sub-dimensions mediate the relationship between social anxiety and negative attitudes toward interaction with robots. Researchers should carry out new studies about the common structural characteristics of the anxiety felt by people due to interacting with humans and robots.
