Determination of skin wound age by using cytokines as potential markers
(ELSEVIER SCI LTD, 2016) TURAN YURTSEVER, NURŞEN; Birincioglu, Ismail; Akbaba, Murat; Alver, Ahmet; Kul, Seval; Ozer, Erdal; Turan, Nursen; Senturk, Ayse; Ince, Imran
Interleukin-1 beta ( IL-1 beta), IL-6, tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) play important roles in the wound healing process. In the present study, human wound specimens (n = 50) were collected from cases of death due to injuries from firearms, penetrating trauma by sharp objects and blunt trauma with a known time of injury and death identified by forensic autopsy. Full-thickness tissue specimens were obtained from injured skin sites, and equally sized intact tissues obtained from the same person were used as controls. Protein determination was performed using ELISA according to the Bradford method for each specimen, and results were provided for individual proteins. IL-1 beta levels did not reach statistical significance in any of the wound groups and were not markedly higher than those in the control group. However, IL-6 showed a biphasic pattern and reached statistical significance in the group with wounds less than 30 min old and in the group with wounds more than 18 h old. IL-6 was consistently higher in all wound groups than in the control group. TNF-alpha showed a statistically significant increase within the first 30 min and remained at a high level in all groups except for those with wounds 2-4 h old. On the other hand, EGF was high in all groups excluding those with wounds 2-4 h old and more than 18 h old, but statistical significance was not reached. Our results suggest that IL-6 and TNF-alpha in particular may be used as early-phase markers. We believe that IL-1b and EGF should be more extensively evaluated in further studies. Current Status and Open Problems in Bone Age Estimation
(2021-05-01) TURAN YURTSEVER, NURŞEN; BUĞDAYCI, ONUR; ESEN B., TURAN M., TURAN YURTSEVER N., BUĞDAYCI O.
Bone age is an effective indicator for diagnosing various diseases and to determine bone ages of livings. The earliest well-known studies belong to the Greulich-Pyle and Tanner-Whitehouse, as a result bone age development atlases were published using hand and wrist radiography. Atlases works well for the younger ages between 0-18, while they have deviations at elder ages. Kazuro Anhara and Takao Suzuki emphasized the importance of changes in pubic symphysis of pubic bones belonging to 20 to 40 years old cases who were not alive for further ages. All this researches focuses on the hand intensive works. However, automation of bone age detection using artificial intelligence techniques such as image processing of radiological images is important in order to prevent human side-effects on the evaluation, they are called automated methods. Some examples are automatic bone age estimation fully automatic with carpal bone segmentation using fuzzy classification, fuzzybased radius model for bone age estimation including image preprocessing, and neural network applications mostly seen on the literature. It is obvious, artificial intelligence promises faster bone age estimation and to minimize different evaluations between experts. However, new studies are needed for applying new techniques (deep learning) efficiently and discovering new bones to estimate elder ages accurately in the field of forensic informatics especially.

Is their choice to be a juvenile with sexual behavior disorder: a study of etiological factors
(ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2020) YILDIZ, ALİ MURAT; Yurtsever, Nursen Turan; Ozdemir, Mirac; Yildiz, Ali Murat; Gurpinar, Kagan
As juveniles become a part of a criminal justice system by committing major crimes such as sexual crimes, this may lead to both individual and social issues. To ensure an evidence-based approach to the primary prevention of sexual behavior problems, understanding the environmental risk factors in this critical period of their lives is essential. The court files dated 2014 on Juvenile with Sexual Behavior Disorder (JSBD) were obtained from Turkey Istanbul Anatolia Court House. All data were collected and statistically analyzed. In total 3777 Juveniles committed crimes in the year 2014 and 131 (3.46%) of them were JSBD cases. It was determined that 130 (99.2%) of these JSBD related crimes were males and 1(0.8%) was a female. The average age of JSBD was calculated as 15,39 +/- 1.52 years of age. Petty Sexual Assault crimes constituted the largest group of these studied cases with 45.8% (n = 60). Major Sexual Assault and Indecent Sexual Assault criminal cases followed respectively with 35.9% (n = 47) and 16% (n = 21). At the stage of assessment of the said juveniles, apart from their individual traits, the structure of their families and surroundings, education and socio-economic status taken into account.

Estimation of Chronological Age from Postmortem Tissues Based on Amino Acid Racemization
(WILEY, 2018) GÖREN, MEHMET ZAFER; Tiplamaz, Sitki; Goren, Mehmet Zafer; Yurtsever, Nursen Turan
Skin and cartilage tissue specimens from 32 male and 13 female corpses aged between 17 and 50years were collected within 24h after the death. Each specimen was analyzed for the composition of dextro (D) and levo (L) forms of aspartate, glutamate, and alanine. Linear regression models were constructed using ln [(1+D/L)/(1-D/L] equationto define the relationship between the extent of racemization and the chronological age. Aspartate D/L rates from cartilage showed high correlation (r=0.779, p<0.001, n=45). Aspartate D/L rates from skin showed very low correlation (r=0.356, p<0.002, n=44). The multilinear regression model of both aspartate D/L rates of cartilage and skin tissues in 44 cases yielded a coefficient of r=0.828 (p<0.001). In conclusion, only racemization rate of Aspartate both in the skin and the cartilage tissues correlated with the chronological age. Our results may imply that the age can be estimated more precisely if two different tissue specimens are obtained from one corpse.
