Myriokephalon savaşı'nın yeri konusuna coğrafi bir yaklaşım

Abstract

Makalede, Myriokephalon Savaşı’nın yeri konusunda, iki önemli tarihi kaynakta geçen coğrafi terimlere ve tasvirlere dayanılarak, savaşın yapıldığı coğrafi ortam şekillendirilerek bir sonuca ulaşılması amaçlanmıştır. Bu tarihi kaynaklardan birincisi, Niketas Khoniates’in Historia adlı kitabıdır. İkincisi, Bizans İmparatoru Manuel Komnenos’un İngiltere Kralı Henry Plantagenet’e gönderdiği mektuptur. Bu kaynaklardan savaşın yapıldığı geçidin; konumu, uzunluğu, genişliği, doğrultusu, jeomorfolojik, hidrografik ve bitki örtüsü özellikleri ile bazı coğrafi kavramlar ve tasvirler detaylı bir şekilde analiz edilmiştir. Böylelikle elde edilen bilimsel veriler, savaş yeri olduğu ileri sürülen yerlerde yapılan arazi gözlemlerinin verileri ile karşılaştırılmış; benzerlik ve farklılıklar belirlenmiştir. Bütün bu coğrafi veriler ve arazi gözlemlerine göre; söz konusu tarihi kaynaklarda ifade edilen savaş yerinin coğrafi ortamına en uygun sahanın Kûfi Boğazı olduğu tespit edilmiştir.

This paper aims to achieve a result about the location of the Battle of Myriokephalon by shaping the geographical environment of the battle on the basis of the geographical terms and descriptions mentioned in two important historical sources. The first one of the aforementioned historical sources is Niketas Choniates’ book titled “Historia”, and the second one is the Byzantine Emperor Manuel Komnenos’ letter to the King of England, Henry Plantagenet (Henry II of England). The geographical concepts and descriptions such as location, length, width, direction, geomorphologic and hydrographical features and flora of the location of the battle as mentioned in these sources were analysed in details. Objective scientific data thus obtained were compared with the data obtained from field observations at areas asserted to be the location of the battle to establish similarities and differences. According to all these geographical data and field observations, Kûfi Gorge is the area that best matches the geographical environment specified to be the location of the battle as mentioned in the aforementioned historical sources.
