Mahur Beste Romanında II. Abdülhamid ve Dönemi

Abstract

Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar (1901-1962) romanlarında ve hikâyelerinde bahsettiği dönemlerin genel görünüşünü vermekle birlikte o zaman dilimini, kültürel arka planı da yansıtarak sosyal ve siyasal yaşantıya dair önemli ve teferruatlı hususlarla beraber işler. Bu durum, Tanpınar'ın okuyucuyu kendi seviyesine yükseltmek isteyen bir yazar olmasıyla alakalıdır. Zaman itibariyle Tanzimat sürecine de geniş bir şekilde yer verilmekle birlikte asıl olarak II. Abdülhamid döneminin esas alındığı Mahur Beste romanı da bu açıdan incelendiğinde tabiatıyla okura çok şey katacaktır. II. Abdülhamid ve dönemi, Mahur Beste'de romanın aktüel zamanında yer aldığı gibi, kurgunun maziye dönük anlatımında da önemli bir kısmını teşkil etmektedir. Bu önem, dönemin hem kahramanların şahsî hayatlarına tesiri hem de devrin sosyal hayatı ve kurumlar üzerindeki hâkimiyeti dolayısıyladır. Romanın aslî şahsı Behçet Bey, bu tesire her iki noktada da maruz kalmış yahut buna bir şekilde şahitlik etmiştir. İncelemenin bütününde olay örgüsünün ilerleyişi takip edilerek II. Abdülhamid'in ve döneminin romandaki yeri üzerinde durulacaktır. Ayrıca değerlendirme yapılırken yorumları somutlaştırmak adına sık sık romandan alıntılara yer verilecektir.

As well as highlighting the general view and thought pattern of the periods in his novels and stories, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar (1901-1962) deals with those particular periods together with the important and detailed considerations relating to the social and political life by providing also a view to the cultural background of the time. This is associated with Tanpınar's being an author who wants to take the readers up to his own level. When reviewed from this point of view, the novel Mahur Beste, which essentially deals with the period of Abdülhamit II while widely covering the process of Tanzimat (Reorganizations Period) as required by the time the plot takes place in, it naturally will contribute to the reader so much. Besides existing in the actual time of the novel, Abdülhamid II and his period constitute a significant part of the retrospective narrative of the fiction. This significance stems from both the effect of the period on the personal lives of the heroes and its dominance over the social life and institutions of the time. The protagonist, Behçet Bey, is exposed to this effect on both sides or witnesses it somehow. The present paper deals with the role of Abdülhamid II and his period in the novel by following the course and plot of the novel. Moreover, it frequently includes quotes from the novel in order to exemplify the comments and remarks in the evaluation process.
